Got some pre-season football mags. Is our depth as much of a concern as they imply?

depth on the d line is a concern. clawson's offense is more of a west coast style. crompton is the biggest question mark by far. we're depending on him.

both coordinators probably kept it pretty vanilla with their playcalling in the spring game. the offense mainly consists of getting the ball to playmakers in space and passing to set up the run. you can find a lot more information on some of the older threads.

I think the spring game was 50% staged as far as the offensive play calling went. Our depth problem? i personally think that our backups on the DL are just as good as most of the starters, but don't read that wrong, i don;t think our starters are very good at all.

Do any of you think there will be much less screen plays and up the middle running?

Spring game was fun though... 75 yard TD pass on the first play, G Jones throwing a TD out of the G-gun. Different routes being run out of new and old formations. Gave lots of hope for some real offensive excitement this season.

Biggest concern... D-line no question. Only 3 DTs with meaningful experience.

I'd say about our only question on offense is Crompton. I know the new offense may be a question, but most offenses work fine as long as the execution is there.

On the defensive side, I'd say that depth in the front 7 is our big question. Our starters can get it done, but the backups will need to step up.

I'm not worried about our D-Line depth that much, lots of talent there. Donald Langley is going to have a good year and provide that extra depth. Linebacker is what worries me. IF our LB's weren't studs last years, we would have definetly been screwed. Chris Donald needs to step up. Also, we need to make sure we have plenty of depth at LB & OL. Crompton needs to play consistent... not anything flashy, just be consistent. Make plays deep. Give Foster the ball more. 8-1 when Foster had 16 or more carries last year. He's a workhorse. Hopefully these things will come together.

How are things in the UK? Haven't seen you around in a while...

Eh, cold, rainy, the usual. Still wearing sweaters and coats most days. Can't wait to make a trip to NY soon to get sworn in. Then I'm going to Atlanta for a few days to catch up with friends and celebrate. :dance2:

The problem on the DL is that we typically like to run 5 DTs and 5 DEs. At DE, we have Brown, Ayers, Martin, and Walker. Our 5th is a ?. G Williams? Bohannon? Walls? EJAW? Fowlkes? Johnson? At DT, we have Bolden, Williams, Fisher, and Langley. Who is the 5th? Mathis? Thomas? Nelson?

Fact is, very few of those players have even shown that they are capable of doing anything at this level, even the starters. Some have shown flashes, but lacked consistency. Some are injury prone. Alot are incoming. I'm not really worried about DE, but DT doesn't look great. Bolden is jeckyll and hyde. Williams is solid. Fisher is almost always hurt and none of the rest have played a significant amount yet.

Best synopsis I've seen of our D-line situation.

Depth is a problem for UT in places.

I agree with much of what the thoughtful posters have already said.

The funny thing though is that the same mags that question UT's depth and use that as a reason to predict a mediocre season are picking UGA in the top 10.

UGA has no proven depth @ OL or RB. They have no proven depth OR first line quality at WR. They do appear to be solid defensively... I just find the pre-season love for the Dawgs to be on shaky ground... and I don't even dislike UGA and have tremendous respect for Richt.

Contrary to most, I think '08 is more like UF's year than UGA's. I think UGA's strongest year will be 09. All three (UT, UGA, UF) have sort of been heading for these two years talent wise. They all should mature at about the same time.

All I can remember is how we whithered on the vine time-and-time again in the 2nd half last week. Our defense never seemed to be able to get off the field.

It's my #1 concern.

Defense up front is a very big question...We can not rank last in sacks this year in the SEC...We must put pressure on opposing quarterbacks or we could be in trouble...On offense I do think it is Crompton but I do think he will be ok...I just wish I could say that about the front 7 as meantioned in many previous posts
