In the post game coach said that the competition is open week to week and that the best practice gets the start.
Here's how I see it. Dobbs is the immediate future I feel. But other teams have tape on him now and he is mistake prone and inaccurate. I'm all good with starting Dobbs and letting him make his mistakes, but if Worley gets healthy soon and has a better practice, he will be back. Coach likes experience and Worley just doesn't make the mistakes. Dobbs will be very inconsistent. I'm fine with that, Butch will not be.
You actually think this "attention to detail" coach doesn't have that base covered? LOLI'm sure it gets discussed and in Dobbs case, maybe there was a plan to give him a redshirt year. But plans change. Again I don't know if Coach Jones asked for "permission", but let's say it's true Coach Jones askes and Dobbs' parents say "no, we don't want him to play. You said you would give him a rs year and we want him to have it. Find someone else" Then what? My point is that it should never get to the "then what?"
So was the rumor that Peyton + the BIG Donors got involved and Gruden agreed to terms and was just finalizing the details.
It's a BS rumor and that's it.
I agree. I was thinking the whole time...."this is EXACTLY what we saw from Dobbs during the Orange and White game, in the Spring."
This is what bothers me about the coaching staff deciding to redshirt Blair, too...despite our desperate need on the OL. Bad call, all day long. Blair didn't have a 5* offer list for nothing. Is his strength and conditioning levels where they'd like it to be....no, but his size and talent is better than what we currently have.
Butch says ALL THE TIME that you can only tell so much about a player WITHOUT LIVE GAME REPS. So, with that in mind...and seeing how Dobbs made that point crystal clear, why in the hell did we try to FORCE a square peg (immobile pocket passer) into a round hole (Zone Read offense)?
THAT, itself has been the biggest mistake of CBJ's tenure thus far. I like Butch and I do think he's got us close to turning the corner. But, if he had started Dobbs....who fits Bajakian's offense better than Worley or Peterman...then we are probably looking at only 2-3 losses rather than 5.
I think them holding Blair out and playing Crowder rather than Weisman at C...has contributed to the number of losses we've racked up. You don't hire a Sumo wrestler to ride your thoroughbred in a horse race, and you don't try to force a lead-footed pocket passer to run your zone Read offense.
(Credit WoodsmanVol for a great nickname)
The Dobb Goblin made some plays out of our broken offense just in time for Halloween. Who knows what might have happened without yet another classic Bonehead Bajakian moment (and we all know which play I'm talking about).
In this winter of Vol discontent, I can't help but reflect on Matt Simms and Justin Worley - two QBs who were tough as coffin nails, who were fed to the lions, and who were then benched for the games they could actually win. I believe in seniors and until the hits kept piling-on, Worley has been one of our best offensive players.
The Dobb Goblin is unleashed; there is no way to rein him back in.
Butch does so much well from Sunday to Friday. Unfortunately, in his business, almost everything that really matters happens on Saturday. He's got to win A LOT of games from now until the end of the season. If he doesn't believe 4 - 0, he is just feathering the nest for the next guy.
Sounds like some BS rumor (not surprised, when you had so many rumors about Gruden accepting the job)....trying to save face for Butch.
Don't buy a bit of it. Families don't dictate who plays/redshirts, etc. Coaches do. I like Butch, but in light of the Spring game (the biggest scrimmage all year until the fall kickoff), how can you flat out miss it in your evaluations of Dobbs?
I mean he has stated repeatedly that you CANNOT properly evaluate a player without live game reps. Who else have they wrongly blown off? If Dobbs was deemed 3rd string they really f-ed up their QB assessment, and called their judgement into question greatly.
I believe Blair has likewise been underestimated....cause he doesn't bench what they would like? Pfffft. We NEEDED Dobbs (best fit for Bajakian's offense) and Blair this season.
You can tell North is excited to have him in there.
He in no way threw Worley under the bus, but post game he said something about the "chemistry" they have together, best friends, roommates, etc.
OP probably thought this thread had potential, but crashed and burned in the end
