Good interview with Mashack on Field of 68

Nice to see Mashack get some interview time for that game. I like the confidence.

Field of 68 has been pretty negative on Tennessee being legitimate this year, or at least, some of their main hosts have been that way. Later in the show they reluctantly said Tennessee was the fourth number 1 seed as of today but you could tell they weren't convinced and didn't think it would hold up until Selection Sunday. Spent some time saying it's still in Alabama's hands (but they have to beat Auburn and Florida to get it). I don't think they believe we're a legitimate contender.

I say this only to finish by saying that I hope Tennessee proves them utterly and completely wrong.

Good quotes from Mashack in his postgame interview also.

"It was funny. You know, I usually look over at Coach to see, like, what he wants. So, we get into our little, you know, ladder drill and ladder play, and he's like, mouthing something to me, and I didn't know what it was, so in my head, I said, 'Oh, he wants me to shoot the ball, so I'm gonna shoot the ball.' But he was really trying to say, if I catch it and I pass it up or I dribble it up [to midcourt], call time out.

"So, right when I got the ball and I seen Z was denied, I'm like, 'Oh yeah, I'm shooting this.' So I was just feeling good. I felt like I was gonna hit the shot. And, you know, that's what happened."

-----
"It's funny because after every shoot around, JG knows this, after every shoot around, I'll get Felix [junior forward Felix Okpara], and at the end, I'll just have him guard me from like, where I shot the ball. And so, usually, you know, I'll miss or I'll make it on Felix. But today, I just imagined Felix was in front of me, and I hit the shot."
-----
"Like I say all the time, I'm still a guy that goes on social media sometimes. And, you know, the main thing for me is I really want to put everything I can into impressing and trying to win over and trying to make Tennessee fans happy, and I know that majority of them appreciate what I do and appreciate how hard I play. And it's something that I feel like I've said this a lot, and other people say it, it's something that goes beyond analytics, something that goes beyond the stat sheet — those extra possessions are plays that I always make, and I think it's, you know, it's a big thing for guys to see that, and really, for guys to trust their eyes and to not just trust analytics all the time, because you can find whatever stat you want in order to, you know, have your opinion on it. And I think that's the main thing that goes into analytics."

I heard this answer on the press conference video and sort of smirked about the "majority" comment. Mashack knows the score. There's definitely been a small minority that's been hating on him and he knows it. But he comes to work and he busts his ass and thank goodness for that.

That said, the rest of that line is just something to treasure, because it feels like less and less guys operate with that mindset. Love me some Mashack. Gonna miss that guy bigtime. Hope he's got a few more big moments to give us to remember him by.

Maschack is the best athlete on ball defender in the country. Offensively though is where he needs to show himself how great he can really be with his ath·let·i·cism...
