Right or wrong the title of the article makes me immediatly get in defense mode. I hate we even have to debate that we are not as good as we used to be.

i wouldn't exactly agree with the whole thing........it has all the making of a blog that skimmed the program guide. he didn't recognize enough names and presto, here's you analysis.....

and i wouldn't exactly call our line last year "talented". minus Sears, the rest were ave. at best.

it wasn't way out in left feild or anything, but i don't come away from that thinking "wow, i didn't know that" either.

I can see where hes coming from...but its not like Tennessee is the only school like this...name one other school that is been an elite program forever and never had years of just so-so play...still thinking?

Why? Any program over time is going to have periods of down-time, episodes of losing. And its usually over the course of 4-6 seasons. Its nothing new. Its the circle of life for a college football team.

I thought that was a pretty spot on assessment right up until the last sentence:

the Vols don’t have the talent level or confidence or big-game experience to get past that point.
There might be a confidence problem, and you can argue about talent, but "big game experience" screams "I needed another reason to put in this article so I just pulled this out my butt." Forget our out of conference schedule, is there any team in the SEC East that lacks "big game experience"?

Oliver's an Auburn man who generally knows his stuff and is pretty evenhanded. It's a little weird that he didn't call out the offensive line for their part in our abysmal rushing game last year, but other than that it's hard to find too much to argue with.

The title of the article makes me grimace too, but it is what it is. If you want people to respect you, win more games.

What makes it a good article? You agree with it surprises no one! And we are all shocked that a shock sports jock from Georgia says something less than flattering about UT. If it's negative about UT it seems to register highly with you. :salute:
really?

Yep, as Bill Parcells is fond of saying, "You are what your record says you are." And unlike a certain Cal fan that has been hanging out in here, I think most understand that you don't gain respect just by telling people to respect you. You have to win.

Not to be defending the guy too much, but I'm sure he knows all the names. He's on the radio here and knows more college football minutia than anybody else I've ever heard. I wouldn't be surprised if he could list most of the two-deep chart for half the teams in the Pac-10 from memory.

The guy's not a genius by any means, but he knows the trivia.

Frankly, our own VN members have been making these points just as well..often better... for a couple of years now.

It did kill a little time though.

I agree that it was an avg. line last year, jake. basically they were good enough to handle either pass protection or run blocking, but not really both. That's the way I saw it anyhow.
