Good Article on 40 True Times

That article was a little strange. Essentially, he said that Bolt is .05 seconds faster to 40 than Johnson is. He placed Johnson at 4.24 versus Bolt at 4.19 but the whole crux of the article was it was a ridiculous mismatch and Johnson was 'football fast', not 'track fast'. I don't see that as a big mismatch.

Not to mention, don't they launch differently at the combine. And what about surface. He seemed to leave a lot of things out.

The trainer also said all these 4.4/4.3 guys were running north of 5 with different timing. But for Bolt, that time was only worth .15 seconds, but it cost them over half a second. They must be really slow to start running.

bolt will never race cj, and he shouldn't, as it's a no-win for bolt. now all of these 'track guys' are trying to say track stars are faster than football players and that a race is pointless, even though there have been players who transitioned from track star to football and didn't show the breakaway vs pursuit that cj has shown. really, the football $$ and popularity has changed the route a fast american kid in grade school takes anyway, especially in the last 30 years. why wouldn't the fastest american play football if they could?

I do agree that most posted 40 times are complete bull$#!%. However, I don't agree that the accurate way to measure 40 times is by using a starting gun. A 40 time is a measure of the athlete's speed and speed alone. When you bring in a starting gun or a light, you are bringing in the element of reaction time. If you are racing against another person, straight up...then you need to incorporate an equal starting apparatus. But, if you are just checking to see how fast someone is, some form of an electronic eye or laser that starts the clock on first movement is the most accurate.

I'm a CJ fan, but I don't know if he could beat Bolt in a 40 race or not. Bolt seems to gain speed at an exponential rate when he's running the 100m. Going back to the speed thing, it would be pretty easy to go get some film of Bolt's WR run and start the clock on his first movement. The only problem would be determining the 40 yard mark on the track. And I know a sprinter would run a shorter race differently than the 100m, but it would give us an idea.

pretty sure he means the track guys train on their starts every day as it can win/lose races. Throw in a person who is fast but has never started from the blocks before and even an average sprinter is at an advantage every time.

Plus if they were to go 100m it wouldn't even be close. At 40yds Bolt is just getting warmed up

Obviously Johnson wouldn't beat Bolt in a 100-meter race. Just as Bolt wouldn't come close to sniffing 2,000 yds in the league. The whole thing was that CJ wanted to race him in a short race, preferably 40yds and 60yds at most, but Bolt wouldn't do less than 100m. The thought is that world class sprinters have a longer distance and don't train to reach full speed as fast as possible, instead hitting their top speed right around the 50m mark. I'm guessing CJ's people figured since he's so explosive and his acceleration is so good that he had a chance in a shorter race. I'm sure he could keep it really close in a 40yd run, but I don't see him beating Bolt no matter what the length of the race. He's the fastest human on earth by a long way.

It's been 30+ years, but I remember painfully too well what it was like the first time I was timed on electronic devices, along with 100+ other guys attending a football camp. I was no speed demon, but reasonably content with 40 times around 4.7. Then we got timed for real - there might have been 1 guy that broke 5.0, barely.

lol - best time I ever got had my hs coach looking at me and my race opponent in disbelief - it was in the low 4s. then we realized we'd run 35 yards...

That makes sense, but if Johnson scheduled a race with Bolt wouldn't he practice starting from the blocks for a few weeks. Maybe he wouldn't launch as quickly as Bolt but he should be close.

I don't think Johnson beats him at any distance, but at 40 yards it might be close. Anything above that and Bolt is an absolute lock. I'd be SHOCKED if Johnson could break 10 seconds at 100 Meters.

Timing and all that technical stuff is cool, but until Bolt came along Darrell Green always seemed like the fastest person I've ever seen. That includes all the track stars over that same time period. Before that I thought no one could touch Bob Hayes. Now its Bolt, for me.

Bolt really takes off about midway through a 100, he's not at maximum acceleration at anytime through the first 40 yards. Someone who's really fast might keep up with him for 40, but over 100 it'd be no contest.

Zach Rogers runs a 4.41 true 40. :)

I am not sure that is true, but he IS fast. I am watching the Georgia game again. he caught a pass in the flats and moved quickly past the first 3 dawgs . He should be a prime target in the years to come.
