I personally don't think too much of it.
However, Butch is the one who told Eric Stryker from Oklahoma to "have some damn class" when he did this in Neyland. That's what makes this look so bad IMO.
It was a personal foul. He got the penalty. He will run stadium steps. That is plenty of punishment. People overreacting saying he should have been benched. That comes across as something else to pile on Butch for "oh his day should be done"! I want Butch gone too but saying he should sit Gaulden for an emotional response is crazy.
Indicative of control jones and shoop have over players. The fact he continued to play speaks volumes. Don devoe benched doug roth for game when he did that at lsu
Crazy? We get 1 Def TD, but we still losing 28-7 at this point in the game, and the players are celebrating and flipping off the fans. Pretty indictive of where the players are mentally and how mediocraticy and acceptance has settled in the players as well as the coaching staff.
I agree with this but he should have sat the rest of the game. If Butch doesn't know or find out he did what he himself called a "classless move" when an opposing team did it then there is a serious breakdown in communication on the sidelines. Would have been another notch in the "runs clean program" that is the only meat to his resume as far as a coach. We all know he can sell and recruit to high school players but as a coach his one calling card is running a clean program. Kicks to the face resulting in stitches, blatantly lying about the Warrior-Turtle fight and letting this happen hurts his brand as much as what has happened (or not happened) on the field.
Gaulden came to the post-game presser and apologized as sincerely as I've ever seen. He was embarrassed as he should have been. He didn't have to do that. He regretted what he did. He manned up as much as anyone I've seen in that type of situation.
