We’re going to meet some friends in Charlotte for the NC State game. We’ll either get there Thursday night or leave early Friday morning and get there around noon. Then we’ll drive back to Nashville on Sunday.

Any recommendations of places to eat Friday night? Things to do in the city. I figured we’ll see the NASCAR museum and HOF, but I know nothing about Charlotte.

Also, what’s a good spot to eat near the stadium before the game?

Any help is appreciated.

what you should really do is take in a HS football game in the Asheville area. The farther west in NC you go, the more physical the football.

I haven't worked in CLT since the Cooties of 2020, so I don't know what has changed, but The Alley at Latta Arcade always had plenty of places to grab a bite and a beverage. Even if restaurants closed, new ones would have opened in their place, it is what they do.

My middle child, who loathes everything city life, will put a smile on his face and even put on a clean shirt if I tell him I am taking him to Cowbell for his birthday. He knows a burger, loves a burger, and says Cowbell's are the best he has ever had. They have great fries and a well stocked bar, if that is your thing.

If you want more trendy, you will find plenty of those too. Charlotte is all about trendy. The stadium is down near the interstate loop around the city, so anywhere you park inside that loop, you will be near enough to a good place to eat.

I might even recommend parking on the outskirts of town and riding the train in to the game. From the north side of town, see if you can get to NODA. From the south side, the Southend district is full of places right along the rail line. You'd have plenty of good trendy options there, too, perhaps with a bit smaller crowd.

I am not terribly fond of CLT downtown. It is too new, too modern, and doesn't have the charm or character of a place like Boston. But, if you haven't been, it is not hard to navigate, as long as you realize the roads all run tilted 45 degrees from NS/EW.

EDIT:

@NighthawkVol here is a link to stops along the train line. It hasn't been updated since 2019, but if you see something you like, you can google to see if it is still there. The train line is fairly new, clean, and well run. All above ground. If you run into any chaos in Charlotte, feel free to reach out. I am a bit of a drive from there, and I am playing that afternoon in a cancer charity golf fundraiser, but I can make it down with bail money before Sunday morning if I have to.

Places to eat along Charlotte light rail

If you are staying downtown, there is a Duckworth's on North Tryon, which is a pretty good sports bar. Good TV's, food, drinks, etc. We watched game 2 of the CWS finale against A&M there, so it has good vibes! :)

The Charlotte alumni chapter is hosting a social Friday night at Town Brewing starting at 7 PM (Town Brewing Co. Wesley Heights Charlotte NC | Town Brewing). We're also working on setting up a place to hang out before the game Saturday afternoon. When that's finalized, I'll post the location.

Since you'll have time Friday, check out the Whitewater Center (center.whitewater.org). It's a man made whitewater river on over 1000 wooded acres with hiking/mountain biking trails, outdoor climbing walls, flat water kayaking, zip lines, a beer garden and restaurants. There is a parking fee but it's free to use the trails and just walk around the facility. It's about 10 miles west of Uptown (Charlotte has an uptown but no downtown).

Carowinds is an amusement park just south of town on the stateline. Not the biggest but some really good coasters.

There are a couple of entertainment areas in the city with restaurants and bars. Most are along the light rail (Blue line) that runs on the south of town. Other ares are NODA (North Davidson), Plaza Midwood and Uptown. Parking in those areas has become a complete pain.

Consider using the light rail to go the restaurants in Southend but for the game, the train will be jam packed afterwards and you may wait a long time to get out. It also doesn't stop that close to B of A stadium

does anyone know which side of the stadium the Vols will be on? I am looking to purchase tickets and want to be on the Vols fans side

Charlotte is a fun city, but if you’re looking for the best food, do yourself a favor and stop in Asheville on the way back.
Bring ballistic protection and a weapon if you’re planning on hitting up Asheghanistan.
Can’t even go to Farm Burger downtown anymore without a violent crime of some sort and/or being propositioned for relations 🤷‍♂️
Sierra Nevada Brewery is a great place to visit

Agreed. It has changed so much the past 10 years. Sad

I am actually thinking about taking Amtrak to Charlottesville the morning of the game and coming back after the game. Direct shot and no need for hotel. Sleep on the train 😂

Sierra Nevada is 25 miles south of Asheville and is nearly a days event in itself

Not sure where you are coming in from, but know that the line coming through Charlotte can be notoriously late. Amtrak is lower in priority than some commercial uses that share the same track, so you can't count on them running on time.

One other great idea for those traveling in for the weekend; Knoxville's own Dirty Guv'nahs are playing at the Neighborhood Theater in Charlotte on Friday Sept 6. If you've never watched them play, they are worth every penny.

I went to school in Mooresville but honestly didn’t spend much time in downtown Charlotte. If you’re a racing fan there is lots to do and see in town. Lots of race shops to tour

Check to see if the Charlotte fun couple is still around. Could be a roaring time.

They're not but the building that caused their downfall still stands just south of the state line. Never finished and now surrounded by single family homes. If you where to look when on the south part of 485 in Pineville, it's easily visible.
