Going Through Old College Stuff

Just think, with that mentality Gen. Neyland would have been fired in '34 after losing to Fordham. :thud:
Not really. Tenn was 8-2 that year, and its 2 losses were on the road to Alabama and Fordham. Fordham beat U.T. 13-12, and had a 5-3 record that year. Fordham was not a bad team, and a one point loss on the road didn't equal Fulmer's 20 to 24 point losses to Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina in 2008.

Not to mention just beating Northern Illinois by 4 at Knoxville. The program was in a serious state of decline in 2008, not so in 1934.

It was the day they hired Hamilton.. and he started his vendetta crusade against Fulmer.

Many around here don't agree.. But I still think we would have another SEC title or two if Fulmer was still the coach. I don't buy the complacency argument for one second.. just think he had a couple years of bad luck and was too loyal to his friends if you can call that a flaw.

And to those who don't agree.. we know already, no need to try and turn this into another CPF debate. I was just stating where I felt the downfall began.. relevant to the OP 's topic :hi:

CPF could have kept his job if he wasn't on the phone constantly with his banker discussing his "mortgage" and undermining his boss. Oh wait, that's how he got his job.

Fulmer had his chance in 2001 and the years that followed. He was the start of our downfall and should have been fired after the 2005 season. HE let the SEC pass him by.

I might get flamed but Hamilton had the right formula for ut to get back.. Hire a rising star hc n give him unlimited funds to put together a great staff that could recruit n coach.

The bad part is he chose kiffin n he screwed us....

Hart may have been thinking the same because he wouldn't let cut bring his staff, which was stupid, but somehow let cbj bring his staff...

I thought that it was Hamilton who didn't want Cutcliffe to bring his staff in 2010, when he hired Dooley. instead.

so going to the SECCG 10 months before being fired is being lazy. Got it.

Getting rid of him has really worked out well

Boy that sece champ game appearance really meant a lot to you..the program was in decline since that lousy peach bowl game against whatever sucka** team..maryland iirc..the sucka** acc threw at us. I knew he was done. Only blind fools could not see it. And just because the hirings made after were botched, in no way means he shouldn't have been fired. It just means that the man hiring sucked as bad as the guy he fired. They both sucked, and for the best evidence of Philberts unworthiness to lead a big time program in the 21st century...what team has hired him since?

9 wins in 06, 10 wins and a trip to the SECCG. Yep, you got that "decline" down. Might want to look in the mirror to see who is blind.

Its really turned out well since you wanted him gone. From all of the faithful Vol fans, a big steaming hot cup of thanks for the worst period of football in Vol history.

It is always interesting to read the lengths people will go to to justify Fulmer's firing so many years after the fact. The record is very clear so we are left with "whats its and whoos its" and all sorts of Dr. Suess sort of correlations and abstract relationships to make the pitch fork crowd feel better about themselves. Oh well, it is what it is.:)
