Going for two

Unreal how it ended. I wanted to see Butch go for two as well, and just knew GT would after how easy it was all game for them to get 3+ yards at will. Taylor was a beast all night. Thanks to GT for calling a play going right at him, and thanks to Shoop for having him lined up there.

I think each coach made a good decision that would give their team the best chance to win at that point. Made a lot more sense for them to go for 2 there vs us.

Agree 100%. It was going to come down to a 2 pt play eventually either way.

Johnson's mistake was running it towards Taylor. GT would of got it if they just went up the middle.
It's incredibly lucky when someone can be completely outcoached and embarrassed tactically and still win.

Ok....how many of you were just like me and were thinking "I might go for 2 here" on UT's last possession in regulation? How many then were really believing we should go for 2 at the end of the first OT?

That describes me. I was itching to put the game away (especially with Kelly getting 8 YPC).

To CBJ's credit, he "stuck to his chart" apparently and didn't take the bait. His opposing coach didn't and it cost him. Kudos to Jones.

I'd never have done it at the end of regulation, but I definitely thought about it in OT. I think Butch got it right though. The longer the game went, the more it favored us.

I humbly disagree and think we should have gone for it at the end of the first OT. It worked out and we won, but how they were gashing us with the run game, and how John Kelly was killing it, had me thinking we should have rolled the dice and hopefully put it away earlier than we did. Hey we are 1 and 0. That's all I care about!

I thought we might go for 2 in the first overtime. The way Tech was moving the ball, I didn't want to keep giving them more chances to score.

I had the exact same thoughts OP. We'd caught a little fire on offense finally, but I still had more confidence in GT's ability to score than ours. So glad to have been wrong!

After all they went through, it killed me to see the Vols turn away from the two points, both times. I thought they should take the two and go home. Yes, the lack of push on the line concerned me. I did not know the odds, but the chances of stopping Tech seemed slim to none, and I thought Slim had left town.

I agree. I thought the longer the game goes the more it favored GT. I'm like you, I didn't have much confidence in our D to stop GT. Stopping GT on a short yardage play, is no small potatoes! BigTime stop! We probably lose in that play 8 out of 10 times!

I think Butch got this call right, even though there is a valid argument for us going for it.

However, I differ from many in that I think Paul Johnson made a huge mistake. We had been unable to stop them, so why roll the dice on the potential for what happened versus waiting us out.

From my point of view in the stadium behind our bench you could feel serious defensive energy when they sent out their QB, even before the timeout. I think it was a cocky move by PJ and inspired our defense for one last major effort. GT had been playing too well to take that risk. Just my opinion.

Loved sitting in the stadium basking in the outcome for a long time after the final whistle. Go Vols!!

BTW, I visit opposing stadiums at least once a year and am always respectfully supportive of our team when sitting amongst the opponent. The GT fans who bought tickets in our section were the worst opposing fans I've been around in years. Arrogant and rude all game, and then left before the end (they knew what was coming).

Kudos to Johnson for having the stones to go for 2. I think it was the correct call regardless of outcome. I thought Jones should have after the first OT.

Those who were bashing Butch for not going for two, and praising Johnson for it -- and those who planned to bash Butch had we lost -- it's not always the answer.

ps. I secretly wanted us to go for two. lol

Same people would have thrown a huge fit if we had gone for 2, not gotten it and lost when GT kicked a field goal?!

Everyone keeps calling it "stones". And I can see that.

But, Johnson answered this question directly in his post game presser. He said "We had no way to stop their offense, so we tried it".

I liked the sound of that. And yes, once our O got in the groove, we crushed them.

Not a good move. Should have waited until 3rd OT. Cost his guys an opportunity keep playing when he did not have to. Going for two prior to 3 OT is not a good move. Glad CBJ knows that.

With all the Sumlin chatter can't believe there's not been more talk about Paul J going for two. BONEHEADED. We could not have stopped them from scoring TDs if the game was still in OT right now!

Butch has no balls, but I almost agree with being a bit scared in the moment as Dormady seemed nervous all night long.

Glad it happened, but Johnson lost this one.
