Godzilla balls Pruitt

Anyone reading the posts on this board during that game, who thinks that falling short in that game wouldn’t have been used as negative ammunition towards recruiting by our very own “fans”....much less opposing teams? Is in a very special stage of denial.

I shutter to think about how many thousand posts we'd have on this forum had our guy touched that inside kick ball 6 inches sooner. It would have made "Jones' FG instead of 2 at UF" and "Phil's letting Ainge get hurt on the last play of the half v ND" look like child's play. "Bama Jeremy" would probably be resting its head by now. :-/

The end of season streak is a big stick on the recruiting trail. Notice level went way up. It makes a statement. Just one of a lot of moving parts that the current staff seems to have under control.

Tennessee does not have the incredible recruiting success as of late without the onside kick decision with 3 timeouts and over 4 minutes left on the clock in the bowl game vs Indiana. Agree or convince me otherwise
I don't give my trust away cheap. I never believed in Jones. Though I defended him getting a legitimate shot I had the same doubts about Dooley as many others. I never trusted Kiffin.

But honestly, I am having a harder time not placing a high level of faith in Pruitt now. He can coach... and he takes the kinds of risks that great coach take. I'm not saying he is one... only that he has that prerequisite trait.

Very possible. But our guy didn't. And in an either large or small but critical degree... he didn't because Pruitt coaches the game the right way. He disciplines a team in the right way. As Vince Lombardi said... "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity".

Ultimately unproveable opinion but based on how many "little thing" failures they had.... but I don't think a Jones coached team makes that play.

You dont have a brother who went to a private school and played basketball do you in middle tn who would have graduated in the mid 90s?
Sorry, no I don't. My brother went to middle, but he didn't play basketball.

Somehow, that tells me that they would likely have good recruiting because they are good recruiters. ;)
Gandalf- couldn’t agree more. But one addition- they can’t be good recruiters without something to sell. You think these guys could pull this off with what Vandy has to sell???

We have :
  • Tradition (although a decade gap)
  • Neyland stadium
  • The Hill
  • A decent Basketball team ( and this matters- TBA on a good weekend is impressive to recruits)
  • Indoor practice facility + weight room
  • New jock dorm + academic center

We have been getting some high ranked recruits that would have gone to other SEC schools in the past. I think this new ruling allowing players to sign contracts has had some effect on those who think they are good enough to cash in. That means instead of the best program for pipeline to the NFL, it's now, the best program where I can get early playing time. These 5 star potential 1st round draft picks are no longer willing to sit on Bama's bench for 2 years to get it. They want immediate fame and fortune. Other normal factors still in play of course just 1 new one.

I think our coaches being honest, and genuine with these kids goes a long way. We are not going to sign them all, and we are not going to graduate all of them. Kids do not want to ride the pine. We have to get them on campus and develop them. None the less, I love what we have been doing on the recruiting trail.
Agreed. The coach/recruit agreement/understanding must be something like, "If you practice 'the right way', you will get playing time. Otherwise, we will develop you to a state that, should you decide to transfer, you will have the skills to compete and we will help you. "

No doubt that our coaches have something great to sell. Even Franklin couldnt make Vandy into a decent program, whereas at a larger venue like Penn State, he is able to recruit better.

But lets be honest. There are a number of historic programs with good facilities (though we are pretty high up there for both items) but what we have lacked is a coaching staff that top players could see would get them prepared and give them the best chance to get paid. Now, I think they see that. Pruitt and staff's sales ability is highly correlated to their coaching ability. Many recruits have said something to the effect that "When Pruitt visited me, he gave me a few pointers that really helped my game, he is a guru, etc". That kind of stuff is what seals the deal. But of course, you have to be a big time program most of the time, to be in the hunt in the first place - and we are.

I’m also beginning to sense that the Saban invincible aura is sailing away. Maybe not at a drastic rate, but chinks in the armor are starting to appear. They will still get good players- don’t misunderstand me, just not ALL the good players. What LSU showed last season was a sexier product than what Bama had. And the recruits see it. They can do well at schools besides Bama. What LSU did was level the playing field for others in that regard.

I think you stated it better than I. I am not a journalist or writer, but the way you worded it sounds way better than the way I did.
I like the part about doing it the " right way " most of all.

good job sir.
