Gloom, despair and agony on us... (merged)

I’m not a Nega-Vol or a bandwagon fan or any of that. I’ve been a Vol fan my whole life. I’ll always be a Vol fan. I have a shared history with my Dad and my family as we’ve watched the games over the years. BUT, it’s just not fun anymore.

You remember how everything kind of revolved around football Saturday? You wouldn’t plan a wedding on a home game. You went to the game, tailgated or cooked out with the family. If you met a stranger on Monday, you could say “how about that game” and they knew exactly what you were talking about.

I used to watch every second of every game. Now I flip the channels. I’ll miss a little here or there. I’ve even turned off the game. I never used to do that. I don’t follow sports radio and stuff like a used to. It just doesn’t matter. We’re irrelevant. And we’ve been that way for 15 years. It’s sad. I hate it. And you’ve lost an entire generation of fans. Young people don’t watch the Vols.

I don’t know what it will take. But this isn’t fun anymore. I’m not giving up. The Vols will always have my heart. But, it’s tough to be a Tennessee Vol.

Yes, they do.

I'm not sure what a local youngster did during the season, but he got in deep doo doo with his folks and got grounded. Part of his punishment was he had to watch the Vols play. Just my opinion, but that might be considered cruel and unusual punishment.

I can say for the first time in a very long time that I missed the last two games of the season. If it’s an early game like 12pm I’ll typically record it, otherwise Ive always tried to watch every single game. Part of the reason was distractions but mostly I guess in the back of my mind I didn’t even want to watch. I guess it’s just so disenchanting.

this once proud football program is D E A D!!! We (the University) had their shot/shots to fix it and didn't! I hate it with everything inside of me...but it's over. Pumpers keep pumping that's your right, but the program has been down far too long. We officially are what the last 15 years says we are.....

We are looking at becoming Minnesota. A once dominant program reduced to an occasional relevance every 10-15 years.

I’m not quite where the OP is, yet. But if we jack this situation up like I fear we might, we will have arrived in Minnesota.

At least you took a huge risk in proclaiming this, I look forward to your future prognostications

I think they are trying to stay relevant as evidence by the firing of coaches every 3-5 years. They have not figured out how to hire a successful coach. They can't go cheap. Maybe there is other stuff contributing to the lack of success. Maybe we are surrounded by to many other successful schools, especially Clemson.

Nope. At least not in my opinion. All Tennessee needs is a legitimate coaching staff. Clemson won’t be Clemson without Goldilocks. They’ll be good but they’ll take a step back. Plus Ohio showed just how much they rely on sign stealing by huddling up on every play. I would think that approach will become common. A lot of people forget all the subpar years Dabo had there. He wouldn’t have lasted that long at a program that had a winning tradition.

With a good staff we could lock up a lot of the areas that have slipped away from us recruiting wise. We have the facilities, base and draw... we just need to hire someone who can manage it.

You mean like winning his division his first full season? And winning the ACC his 3rd full year? He had 1 subpar year, his second season.

Yeah I was thinking he started in 08 but that was the year he took over halfway through. Either way counting that one they went 19-15 after starting 2008 as a preseason top 10. Or 29-19 if you count that ACC championship season that saw them barely cracking the top 25 once the dust settles. A pretty far cry from their record as of late

I think it’s time for all of us to come to the realization of something that has been staring us dead in the face. We are a dead program. It’s over folks. We still have inept leadership. A university that doesn’t care. At this point we will be lucky to field a roster of scholarship players to play our first game. If we win more than 1-2 games this year it will be a miracle.

No Freeze. No Kiffin. No Malzahan or Herman. No Chadwell or Napier. There will be no return to our status like we were in the 90’s. We will not be able to land a good HC. I believe we are a perpetual 3-4 win team from here on out.

Live down here among the Bama/Auburn folks who know I am a UT fan. So tired of having people approaching me and asking what I think about the situation at UT and showing sympathy. All I can say is, what do you expect, it's Tennessee. Over the past 15 years we as fans have been given little in the way of something to be proud of. On the contrary, we have been embarrassed and shamed on and off the field and left hoping that the nightmare would be over soon. Unfortunately the nightmare became reality, albieit one that was difficult to accept. The longer it went on and the bumbling by idiots continued, hope grew dimmer and dimmer. True UT fans have given so much in their support of the program not only financially but by way or moral support as well and been given little in return. I can think of no other fan base that has been as long suffering as UT. Goodness knows you would think that those making the decisions would recognize and respect the fan base since it is the heart and soul of the program. Unfortunately they have turned Knoxville into a nuclear waste land full of plague and pestilence. Now we are asked to wait 3-5 more years for another rebuild knowing all along that the plan is similiar to the disaster we have already lived through on three to four prior occasions. As one fan previously observed, our patience has worn thin and is about gone. We are not fair weather friends because there has been no fair weather. For those of us who have spent a lifetime following the Big Orange, we expect so much more.

Our ship has sunk. What HC is gonna take this job when all the talent is leaving? Not even Saban could save us now.

We are dead.

I can’t begin to describe how heartbroken I am but Tennessee has made the terrible decisions that has led to the demise of this program. My kids will never know the Tennessee that I knew growing up and that cuts me even deeper and the fact that all The decisions that are made regarding this program Boil down to someone that never even played a down of football. All this being said I’d like to thank all the people who have replied to my post in years past in took the time to read and enjoy all the gossip that surrounds Tennessee football this is me signing off Hopefully we will be back.

It's saddening and startling just how mediocre Tennessee is. Football is at the bottom, Lady vols cant get past the 2nd round and Barnes can't coach but can recruit. The mighty have fallen. There was a time when people feared the Vols and Lady Vols. I think that time has passed.

Even in the not so distant past our swim teams were of national prminence, recall the Olympic trials where Vols easily stood out by shaving their entire bodies once allowed annually right before those trials? We are just not as serious about being champions as we once were IMO.
