It's not so much because of the loss to Cal. I think the Vol fanbase could have handled that just fine with very little backlash.

It's the how the loss came about. We saw the exact same problems against Cal that we saw last year. No d-line play. Awful tackling. Zero adjustments by Chavis. Questionable run blocking. And still bad play on special teams.

Many fans thought these issues were corrected in the offseason. Nothing but glowing reports on the o-line. The tackles have stepped up. Fulmer feels good about their play. We're "fired up, focused, and prepared."

And then we saw the Cal game. Nothing has changed. We were outmuscled, outrun, outjuked, outcoached, and out anything else you can think of.

Like I said before. If we'd lost but the defense didn't look terrible or it was a close game you wouldn't see nearly the backlash. But it happened the way it did. Makes people lose confidence in Fulmer. I'm sure somewhere in his head we were a couple of plays away from beating Cal. Or those gosh darned refs were just out to get us.

I'm not sure we'll get a big enough lead to put Crompton in, but I think that the coaches would love to have that opportunity and would take advantage of it - but Ainge starts.

I think Ainge plays the whole game unless it's a major blowout.

He needs some playing time with those young receivers that didn't get to play much at Cal.

Guys...by seriously considering this you are more or less saying that USM is a gimme and we don't need our best players out there to win...

IMO...if we don't have Ainge out there playing at the level he played at last week then we could be in for a long day...and maybe even a loss...

Southeren Miss is more capable of a opening day/UF sandwich game upset than any team I can remember us playing in that spot

You're right, we should just forget the fact that EA is a senior and just tank the season to get these guys snaps. Why not just grab a HS QB and make him the future right now? He could quit his HS team and just start the last few games. Sure, it may take a couple years but we just want to be ready for the future right?

Ainge will start (obvious) as he had a very good showing at Cal given that he was injured and had no opportunities to stretch the field. Crompton will see a few snaps in both the first and second halfs as will another Athlete. Ainge will finish the game or close to it as this game will be close going into the fourth quarter.

You've got to get Ainge as much experience and confidence as possible going into Florida unless he becomes physically unable to perform. Crompton may or may not be the man next year but Ainge is going to be the man this year so this discussion is somewhat moot unless there's an injury more severe than current.

Why would we remove our starting QB from this game? He and the receivers need the work before the UF game. This is getting ridiculous.

I know southern miss will try to come after him to get him moving,that i know for sure.He said if he can't plant and throw it might come out bad.

Yes it does make sense. Ainge's pinky admit it or not was the reason he diddnt throw deep down field. Not throwing the bomb or a deep passes is not Tennessee football. Ainges finger isnt going to magically be better in 3 days. He still will not have the power or accuracy to throw deep which would aid our running game. He is banged up somewhat....so I dont see why we shouldnt let Crompton start and see what happens. If things start getting grim then let AInge come back in before it gets to bad. But Id rather have a healthy QB anyday that can pass where and how he wants to than one that is limited to short yardage passes:whistling:

You need a clue if you're buying into letting Crompton play most of the USM game.

If it is true and we will have to outscore our opponents this year, why stunt the growth of what seems to be a very dynamic offense despite some 3rd down busts and questionable play calling?

while I don't agree with it, I think the sentiment is that this season is destined to be a disaster, so we might as well use it to prepare Crompton for next season, when we have a chance to win some big games.

If we are 8-4 at the end of the season, I'm not so sure Hamilton waits until the bowl game to make a decision, considering Michigan will be competing with us more than likely for some of the hottest coaching prospects.

I think it sends a terrible message to our Junior/Senior when we pull a senior QB, in order to prepare someone else for the future.
Also it might be slightly premature to pull the plug on the whole season after just one game, but what do I know.

I didn't say that Ainge played poorly at all. Quite the opposite. The question in my mind was whether it made sense to give him as much rest as possible heading to Florida so that he can heal and, if so, what were peoples' thoughts on how that would work.

I personally did not advocate sitting Ainge for Crompton is order to prepare Crompton for the future. Others may have. My point was that giving Ainge time to recover from the finger and the shoulder injuries might pay off on 9/15.
