The dumbest thing about the BCS is that it has suddenly vaulted "winning a national championship" into everybody's expectations. Things didn't break Tommy Tuberville's way, and he's out of a job; they didn't break Mark Richt's way, and he's on the hot seat; but they did break Urban Meyer's way, and now he's gunning for his third national championship in four years.

The goal should be to win multiple SEC championships. That's what you can control. If you do that, you'll be in the national picture often enough.

(We can't get a playoff fast enough to get rid of this beauty contest crap.)

It's ridiculous and what's more ridiculous is the argument against one. Holds no water in my book.

I think we will have a championship within 10 years. They aren't that easy to come by, you know? Unless you play Ohio State...

As long as we're getting back in the SECCG and winning at least half the time (speaking of... we're due... after losing the last 3), we'll have our chances.

I expect us back in the SECCG in 2011 or 2012.

i think we will come close in the next few years, but it is going to be a tough road to get there.

Ummmm....Tennessee still has to beat Bama and Florida. But to be a sport I will say 4-5 years.

Those of who you are guaranteeing a national championship in a few years need to get a clue. I don't care if you are the unanimous preseason number one and have a team full of NFL first rounders, the odds are not with you. I want the Vols to win a NC as badly as the next guy, but some people on here need to be realistic. I also know that many who have posted on this thread understand that we need to start by winning the SEC and I totally agree. Tennessee can only control itself. Win the SEC and there is a good chance you'll be in the NC. Anyway, I'll say we have an SECCG appearance in 2011. Beyond that it is anyone's guess.

A national championship is unpredictable because of the stupid BCS computers. Any team could go undefeated, win their conference championship, and still not make it to the NC game. Remember the 2001 NC that featured Nebraska.

There was no other unbeaten conference champion that year.... Unless it was a mid major.
