Realistic- probably end up with someone like NC State's coach

Doeren does have NC State in the top 16 but his record vs top 15 teams is as bad as Butch's. He has doon a good job there thus far and if they manage to beat Notre Dame Saturday his name will start being tossed out by media types. However, UT can only hire a proven coach w/sustained success at major level.

I read an article titled "3 very realistic options to replace Butch Jones at Tennessee." This article skipped all the Grudens, Kellys, Kiffins, and other very slim possibilities.

The 3 choices were: 1.) Scott Frost: current head coach at UCF. Took over a terrible team in 2016 and currently has them 6-0 and ranked in the top 25. Pointed out that with him having coached in Pac-12, Big-10, and in Florida, he should be able to recruit.

2.) Matt Campbell: head coach Iowa State. Currently 5-2 after going 3-9 last year. Went 35-15 at Toldeo before going to Iowa State. Upset #3 Oklahoma earlier this year.

3.) Greg Schiano: defensive coordinator for Ohio State. Considered to be the beat coordinator head coaching candidate in the country. Went 68-67 in 10 seasons as head coach at Rutgers and made 6 bowl games. And while the record may not be overly impressive, he did it at RUTGERS.

So, the question is, if you were given these 3 options as the next head coach at Tennessee, who would it be and why?

Mark Howard stayed Mike Campbell from Iowa State was worth a look. Pretty impressive but I personally would like to see a few more seasons. He’s 37. So not quite a man yet. But if they botch this hire would be optimistic hire, if it’s on a botch hire

Frost is not realistic. Campbell is not realistic. Schiano has proven nothing that he can compete in the SEC or lead an SEC program like UT.

Frost is likely on our list in the range of 6-9. He is going to be #1 on Nebraska's and a lot of other schools like ASU, Ole Miss, and potentially others. I for one don't want another mid major coach unless they have some form of SEC coaching experience or championship experience. At this point, we can't take on a risk hire.

At the end of the day, we aren't going to get into a bidding war with Frost's alma mater, and others. Is Frost worth a $5 million per year contract or more? Not a chance. Would Nebraska pay him that much? 100%.

In regards to Matt Campbell, he has a lot of unknowns. His claim to fame is upsetting a first year coach at OU. For us to hire him, lets judge him on more than one game at Iowa State and 2 seasons there. The only way we should hire a head coach from Iowa State is if they make a run at the playoff. He is a coach that would be a 3 million dollar coach. Hell to the no.

And lastly, Schiano? Really? His jig was up at Rutgers and cashed in for an NFL job where he flamed out. He would be a perfect coach for a school like Vandy, Ole Miss, or Kentucky because he would literally be on the job training for those schools. He's overrated in my opinion.

I know these aren't your picks or ideas, but I think these options were thrown out to get clicks.

If these are the "realistic" budget options, we are screwed.

Thanks for the insight. I wasn't really familiar with any of them other than Frost a little bit.

Would only want Frost on that list.

We were fortunate, considering what he did at Texas.

Gimme a break. Strong would have fared much better at the real UT than Texas.

Gotta remember at the time that he was very pissed at Florida for hiring over him after Urban. Widely talked about because of his marriage. He has a chip on his shoulder against Florida. Think of how bad Florida has been since 2013. Any competent coach would have 3 wins vs them. Strong would have likely ended the streak in Year 1.

At the time, was recruiting his ass off to get South Florida kids to Louisville of all places. That is a very impressive.

He also had major championship experience running two national title defenses that won rings for Urban. (41-14 in 2006 and 21-14 in 2008).

His style was simply a bad fit from Texas. Add in the Admin/Donor turmoil going on there that he walked into, it was a recipe for disaster.

Honestly, if Strong and USF go 12-0 and crash a NY6 Bowl. He moves into my Top 3. He's already #5 on my wishlist.

The only concern with Strong isn't coaching or recruiting, its staffing. He doesn't have a glowing track record of OC Hires.

We don’t need a coach who has been successful in little league football as a head coach. We also don’t need someone who has only had one or two good seasons.

We need someone with a proven ability as a head coach to win at the highest level.

I could see us with Kyle Whittingham, Matt Campbell, or Mike Norvell. I would go after Charlie Strong. He wasn't a good fit at Texas. I'd love to get a big name, but that's not UT's style.

Strong is the best fall back option if the likes of Kelly, Gruden, Mullen, and, yes, even Les Miles turned us down.

Give me a guy with some form of championship experience in the SEC, if we can't get Grude or Kelly.

Here are the three finalists I believe we will be looking at
Scott Frost
Dino Babers
Matt Campbell
I believe our next coach will be............................ Matt Campbell
(this is just a guess but I believe it to be a reasonable one)

I would be okay with either Frost or Fuente. Of course I'd rather have Gruden, Tony Dungy and Saban but that just ain't gonna happen is it?

And for the record, I'd much prefer Stoops over Les, but I don't think he wants to coach.
To the contrary, I don't think you're dumb at all. In fact, I'd say we're pretty much on the same page in a very thick book. FYI: If I had any say, I'd grab Stoops in a NY minute. It appears he'd just grown weary, for whatever reasons, and just wasn't enjoying that same old grind. Growing older (but I'm plenty older than is he), causes one to sometimes look around and try to figure out where they're headed from here. If Stoops were to get back into coaching a P5 program, then I pity his scheduled competitors. He's the whole package and has proven he can beat Saban. Didn't mean to sound mean 40 Cap.:good!:
