People wondered if his loyalty to his staff would keep him from doing what he needs to do. However only Azzanni and Thig remain from the initial staff in 2013. He not only has made changes, but upgraded. I realize this doesn't change everything, and wins are necessary, but definitely does answer a question a lot of us needed answered.

Go Vols!

I have to admit I didn't think Coach Jones would make the necessary coaching changes.Upgrades at every hire, this year and last!

and Gillespie.

He is doing it the right way with assistants. Need to change out staff every 5-6 years so they don't get stale and lazy. Like that he is making changes

Proof is in the pudding though. See how they all work together. Results will show if good fits or not

Am sure Jones understands his new boss will probably have same attitude towards performance = job stability, and under performing = exit, stage left. It's business, and thankfully Jones isn't willing to let weak links take him down without trying to do something about it. Kudo's to Butch for making the difficult decisions and acting on them

This. Assistants move around all the time. If an assistant is in the same position for several years, something is usually wrong.

Love the Hoke hire. Im still uneasy about an OC with zero playcalling experience. Only time will tell. For everyone's sake, I hope they are immensely successsful. Go VOLS!

Ok. But how much credit do we give a guy for fixing a crisis he created? Do we really pat him on the back for having to fire one of his own hires?

Does Gillespie count as an "original" staff member when he replaced Graham a month or so in?

Butch deserves credit for making changes in an effort to improve things, especially player development. I like most all the changes he's made....Canales is the only one I question. Now I hope he can hold onto Gillespie....I trust he will.

So they finish with the 11th ranked class and he gets the pink slip...in February?

To be fair, if you decide to go that route, then we have to bash basically every coach in America. All of them have hired and fired people.

Butch is clearly a guy who believes in his "system" & organization. He likely felt comfortable going with guys who were emersed in it. Even the new hires & DeBord are guys he's had longstanding relationships with.

Jones does not deserve credit (no UT coach does after losing to Vandy and SCjr, and finishing out of top 10 in recruiting). Instead he should look for a new job asap while he can still get at least some credit for his early success in recruiting. With most key players gone, it's hard to imagine how next year won't be even worse than 2016. The only hope is that our DC (Butch's only great hire in 4 years) starts delivering something closer to his career average performance. Our offense will be very young and most likely struggle big time so much improved defense is our best hope next year. I hope I'm wrong but after all the disappointments we just went through with wasted talent and sub-par recruiting class it's hard to find reason to be optimistic.
