Of where this staff ranks in comparison of what the other three second year SEC staffs are accomplishing.

Defense is up there with the best of them. Linebackers are extremely improved, secondary plays heads up opportunistic. More pressure from our line this year than in the past three years combined.

Offense is way behind, offensive line or not. Bajakian has shown no ability to scheme with the players he has or call plays to take the heat off our line. Calls plays seemingly regardless of down or distance.

We've had 4-5 yrs of crap prior to Jones, attrition from multiple classes which lead to inexperience in 2010 and 2014, and a top 5 strength of schedule every year.

Are you talking about Malzahn who basically took a year off, Arkansas who had to control the damage for one season or Ole Miss who is in year 3? Who is the other program in yr 2? This is a tougher rebuild than most fans want to admit.

I admit they were outcoached but you're running game is non existent and your serviceable QB is commiting turnovers... what do you do?

I'll give you an honest assessment. This staff is evaluating, recruiting, and putting 18 yo players on the field and competing against great teams. We're assessing, developing, and recruiting at a higher level than any other UT staff in the past decade.

Are there some issues with the offense being implemented? Yes but I have confidence that will get fixed.

Stoops at Kentucky is in year 2 as well.

Exactly. I've seen people say CBB has done more with less at Arky. That is untrue. as you have stated.

Can I give an assessment of the ability of the average VN member to realistically assess the ability of where this staff ranks in comparison of what the other three second year SEC staffs are accomplishing?

You can kind of compare. They played Florida too.

Yea, everyone knows UK put up more points than us on UF, but we held UF to less points. We're probably even UK right now.

Bielema and Stoops both look like they have definitely improved their team from year 1 to year 2, which is what a rebuilding job is all about. Our team looks about the same, maybe a little better here or there, but worse in other places. Overall, you certainly can't say the results are changing.

Malzahn's team looks like it has taken a step back, but it would be hard not to after winning the SEC and playing for the NC last year. You'd still have to be thrilled with the hire and where you are at as an Auburn fan.

It will be alot clearer by the end of the year (I'm curious how the team responds after the stretch of hard games, and likely losses, to Ole Miss and Alabama) but I'd say right now, our outlook is the most troubling.

Honest assessment? Until the Vols have an above average QB, It's not going to get any better.

I've noticed how quickly some will point to what Butch inherited to explain his 2-10 record against the Power 5 conferences, but they never point out that what he inherited also played a role in what many see as his successes. Butch took the UT job at a time where we had more in-state talent than in recent memory, at a time we were going to receive legacy recruits, and had more than the normal amount of scholarships at his disposal.

If you are really looking for an honest assessment, and not just validation of what you already believe, you have to look at the whole picture.

It's one thing to say CBJ is in year 2 and compare how he's doing in year 2 to others in year 2 but that ignores one huge factor--how bare was the cupboard when the new coach came in? You know, Malzahn is in year 2 (or is it 3?)--do we think it fair to compare UT to AU? Of course not--they had a ton of great players that Chizik couldn't figure out what to do with when Gus arrived (although Gus is a stud).

The biggest issue is what the coaches have to work with and Butch started at the bottom.

The one negative assessment I would make--and I admit I don't see practices, etc-- CBJ seems somewhat stubborn on sticking with the same OL players. There are 15 OL on the roster and I find it difficult to believe a little more competition for playing time isn't a viable option. Perhaps he believes the subs aren't any better and since the subs are older, we may as well get our freshman some experience. In the meantime, Worley is getting killed.

I can assure you that UK's cupboard was much more bare when Stoops was hired. Did UK even have a team before he showed up?
