“He’s done a really good job, man,” Gillespie said. “He’s finishing his runs. He’s done a really good job trying to put on the extra weight that it takes. I think last year he was able to sit back and watch. Sometimes just those mental reps are the things that you take for granted. He was already a smart kid, but he’s learning how to play with his body. But he’s been physical.
“The scrimmage we had on Saturday, shoot, man, he was one-on-one with a safety twice, and he ran the guy over and got in the end zone. He was blocking a guy that we can’t block with his pads.

“He’s been doing a really good job, and obviously I’m encouraged so far midway through spring with how he’s been performing.”

Pass protection is a common problem for young running backs, and Gillespie didn’t deny the fact that Fils-aime remains very much a work in progress in that area.

But so was Kelly, and so was former Vols star and future high-round NFL Draft pick Alvin Kamara, the coach added.

“It’s no different than any guy,” Gillespie said. “I mean, Carlin’s right there with John and with Alvin, with where he was at this time in his career. He’s got to do it in a game. I don’t know what he’s gonna be able to do until he does it in September, but so far he’s been doing well in the situations we’ve put him in.”

Need him and Chandler to be ready.

I'm betting they both will be.

Kelly won't have to carry the load.

If CRG says good things about CFA, we have nothing to worry about. CRG is a really good coach.

This is very good news if it's not just coach speak

shocking.. do you really think he would've said he sucks?

He never said that he doesn't suck, just that he's pleased. This is nothing more than coach speak. We won't know what kind of ability he has until we see much more or him on the field.

I remember when Gillespie said about this time last year we have 3 NFL running backs on this team. People said I know Hurd & Kamara but who else is he talking about. So I take great stock in what he's says. If there is nothing there he wont say anything so this is not your normal coach speak guy.

But see, he was wrong, Kamara and Kelly are NFL backs, but not Hurd! I don't think Hurd is NFL anything!

At 5'11" and 175, he seems a bit too light to play in the SEC maybe he can redshirt at some point and add 30 pounds of muscle.

That would be great...And so easily accomplished. Do agree that the 175 is light for a SEC Back.

He's not at 175 is he? Surely he has put On Weight. I remember one of the writers commenting on how slender he was. We shall see.

He seemed undersized last season, so I just checked the roster and he's listed at 5'11" and 175 pounds. That's hardly the size of running back that UT needs to compete in the SEC.

I think hes put on some weight. Caught a glimpse on one of the practice vids the other day and had to rewind it to make sure it was him. He looks like hes put on a decent amount of good weight. Looked shredded and a lot more like 190ish to me.

That was his weight last year, as a true freshman. Pretty sure he's put on some good weight since then

IIRC Doug Mathews said he has good straight line speed but very little wiggle. Anyone remember Vando Davis?

will be interesting to see the RB battle this year, thats all I will say. there is going to be some really good competition, probably see someone transfer at the end of the year too. JK has #1 locked up, but if he goes down who do you go to? CFA will be the go to guy early but Coleman may be more physically ready than CFA or Chandler, he might sneak into the #2 spot based solely on his blocking ability...

Yeah but how much did Deuce McAllister weigh?

175 is kind of light though. How much did Mosely weigh when he first came on campus?
