Gilbert: Martin vs Pearl, easy choice

Pearl will always be the favorite UT coach of all time in many fan's eyes no matter what. I will never say never, because strange things can always happen, so I will give it a 1% chance of Pearl ever coaching here again. But it will get very interesting next year if CCM doesn't go dancing. Not that Hart will hire Pearl, but how the fanbase will react.

His NCAA tourney record is 100 times that of Martin's........oh that is right Martin doesn't have a tourney record so you really shouldn't compare the 2 as Martin doesn't deserve to be compared to coaches who have actually made the tourney.

Really? I'm not a Pearlophile but that's a bit much. The guy gets fired from Tennessee and still loves Tennessee just like he coached herea and is a true definition of VFL. I dont' think we should hire him back but I'm all for exploring other options if this season doesn't pan out.

Everyone needs to forget about Pearl coaching here again. I just don't get why people are so defensive of a guy that is calling for an extension after these first 2 years.

Because after living in the success that Pearl had here, many people do not think CCM is the right coach for UT. Some do not think that he has earned it. Some already want him gone.

The best thing for UT is for CCM to have a successful year next year, IMO.

Another way to look at it would be to say that even a bad coach would win next year.

You won't give any credit to Martin for a successful year next year because "even a bad coach" would be successful? Tell me again how that worked with UK this year. I mean, that team had so much talent, I think a bad coach would've had success there.

Experience is a major factor. Andy Kennedy is not a very good basketball coach and he was even able to win with an overwhelming combo of talent+experience. People just dont get it sometimes. The go on and on about how great these recruits are and then cry about the players we have now. Trae Golden is a 12 point 4+ assists guy. Chances are Darius Thompson is NEVER going to be what Trae Golden is. Hubbs may be an excellent player but he isnt going to be Jordan Mcrae from the 2nd half of this year unless we are really lucky. Jordan isnt going to be Jordan of the 2nd half of last year. Then we go crazy over stokes "double double." If he is a great player and a legit 5 star talent than what type of production are you expecting from a 3 star like Davis?


A decent year next year will feel good at the time but unless Martin is able to parlay it into a much more talented and much deeper class of '14 we are going to be really bad in years 4 and 5 of Martin.

Fire everyone in the Athletic Department and also Cheeks then hire Pearl back. We'll never miss any of them like we miss Pearl.
