what surprised me the most about this game:
1. We were manhandled on both lines of scrimmage. No excuse!
2. Our offensive play calling was HORRIBLE. It either changes or DeBord must go!
3. Bob Shoop may be a great D-Coord. Vs. traditional pro style offenses, but he didn't have a clue how to stop all of the mis-direction that App. St. Was running
4. Josh Dobbs looks like he has regressed and played more like a freshman than a Sr
5. A win is a win. However, at this point My prediction has changed from 10-2 to 7-5
As bad as a win can look. The defense got better as the game went on, one touchdown on a short field, and one on a blown coverage where Vereen peeled off and covered a RB on a wheel route. Our offense looked horrible. Any time we were behind the chains, besides Josh Malone's first catch, we sputtered and stalled. Their front 7 was beating us more often than not, and we didn't have the confidence to pass over them. Discouraging win, but a win, at least. I remember squeaking by Syracuse in an opener once upon a time...that's the best positive spin I can put on it, other than maybe that this team obviously needed to be brought down to earth sooner rather than later.
Dobbs has been and always will be a bad qb. I have argued with my friends for the past couple of years over this. He is totally incapable of making any kind of 'money' throw. He can't be counted on to extend drives when needed, and he can't throw the ball down the field. The throw to Malone last night was underthrown and Malone was just bigger and stronger and wrestled it away from the defender. He had his guy beat and once again Dobbs couldn't hit him in stride. Dormady should be the guy. Dobbs is no CEO qb. Smart in the classroom, dipstick on the football field. DeBord's play calling is atrocious as well. It's so vanilla and there is nothing fluid about the offense. Jones is the real idiot though, because he allows all of this to continue right under his nose...and has for years. He's not an SEC coach by any stretch of the imagination.
"That's"I cannot get over this post. Dude Thats the definition of coaching. NONE of those plays should have happened
Totally agree. I was expecting so much from these kids. And thats not fair. SH#@ happens, But it was just one game."That's"
Jeezus, sometimes kids mishandle things. A pattern of these things is a different item. Hard to gauge on the first game of the season.
Pfft...self righteous arm chair coaches are the worst but I respect your zest for the VOLS.
My biggest concern was definitely getting whipped in the trenches, both sides of the ball. Zero push by the D and when they did get thru it was because of the misdirection and they were let through on back side. Offensive Line play was as expected, they only got "better" last yr because of Dobbs ability to scramble and avoid a sack. This scheme is weird to me, if we're gonna run the ball why does our line let the D come to them? Almost like pass blocking except when contact is made they try and push. Fire off the ball stay low make contact and push his ass in the dirt!

Great points. I'd add:
1. I heard before the game about the UT D-line size and speed. Either it's not there or the heart was missing last night. My guess is the latter. App won the trenches largely because our coaches preach that day in and day out - win the LOS, win the game. I'm encouraged for App's chances during the season if we can stay healthy.
2. Debord's calling Hurd up the middle on every first down with an O-line that was on its heels most of the night wasn't exactly brilliant. Debord will have to do better for UT to succeed long-term.
3. See #2 about controlling LOS. App was able to reach the edges with Deltron Hopkins on the reverse several times precisely because the D line was struggling to get around the edges and was zeroed in on Marcus Cox so much. It all goes back to the trenches. If we had a passing game at all, the game might have looked very different.
4. Dobbs ... hmmm ... is it that he's that bad or that he doesn't have enough time? Here we are back at the O line. Is it that Dobbs can't check of receivers or that he doesn't have time to check off receivers? It's probably best to answer that question earlier in the season than later.
5. Don't throw in the towel yet. Beat VT. That really is the only game that counts for UT right now.
We had a great time in K-town. Thanks to all of you who were gracious hosts as we wandered around campus taking in the sights. Neyland, as promised, was a one of a kind experience that I will long remember.
Good luck the rest of the season. Go Vols!
