Get real.

95% of Volnation would be thrilled with the season if Butch beats USC and Vandy with the East and the Sugar Bowl on the line.

When the hell did that become too much to ask for the UT HC?

We should expect and be content with 20 year droughts between SEC titles? Is that getting real?

4 coaches in 10 years. Yeah let's dump some more coaches. That'll fix it

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

I'm kinda on the fence about Jones, but I have no confidence whatsoever that the next hire would be any different than the last three.

Apparently so. This is the same thing that happened to Ole Miss. You hit a certain low and you never recover. I don't think we're there yet but we're getting closer every year. The fact that we now have fans criticizing fans who expect to be competitive, not only nationally but just within the conference, tells me that the trajectory is wrong. We need a strong AD to get this thing back on track. Maybe Jones is part of taking the next step or maybe he's maxed out and we need someone else. I think we'll know Jones' long term fate by this time next year.

IF you can't win the SEC East by year 5 then you probably don't belong here. It isn't crazy to expect a divisional championship by year 4. Or

SOME of the people on this board think that an SEC championship is their birthright as a Vol fan. They cite our big stadium , rich history , committed fanbase ( many of whom should be) and rake Jones over the coals cause we are not there yet. They conveniently overlook that Fla, LSU and Bama have won MULTIPLE ncS SINCE 98 when we did. They have just as much money, fan support , pay their coaches as much if not more than we do. Fla,LSU, and Texas A&M all lost at least 4 games this year and their fans , though unhappy, are not ready to panic. grow up and deal with the fact that Sabans run at Bama is a once every 40-50 year freak occurrence and as long as he remains there, no one can unseat him and the redneck Tide . As Clay Travis has said" the other 13 teams would be better off if they each gave 3 million to a fund used to bribe Saban not to coach" Short of that - we will all be playing for second place . Histrionics and whining are pointless. So- get off Butchs back and remember how the Dooley saga found new and unique ways to make our football lives painful. Oh the humanity.

Um...
I visit their fan boards often.

LSU fired their coach and hired someone that had them in the winning track.

Texas A&M looks exactly like volnation right now. Calling for their coach to be fired and lots of hate.

Florida won the east in a rebuilding year.

I hate this holier than thou crap. Most fans don't expect to win an SEC championship every year. What we want is a competitive team. We get pissed at Butch because he finds ways to squander what should be a talented team and underachieve. We had the East won, then we lost to South Carolina and Vandy, two teams we should have beaten. He recruits talent, but he has problems developing that talent. If mediocrity makes you happy, then by all means, enjoy it, but don't expect other Tennessee fans to accept mediocrity as a given. We can be great, but if you don't expect greatness, you'll never achieve it.

Best Post yet.
This should close the door on this thread.

while that may not be exactly "crazy", it may be something that hasn't been done since neyland really.

food for thought:

the sec expanded into 2 divisions in 1990. the vols have won a divisional championship 5 times - 97,98,01,04,07. that's 5 times in 27 years. that's almost 5.5 years every championship. ut went 7 years before first east title, before all 5 wins in 10 years. next year will be 9 years without a divisional title so it isn't like ut hasn't had a 5+ year drought before. even if you go way back, there are regular 10 or so year gaps between titles and only neyland really won them with regularity.

I LIKE your attitude. I really do. I was for hanging Butch after the Sc game , so I can see how people get so angry. But - who you gonna get? Even Petrino ( he of the bad karma) lost badly at seasons end. There aint no Supercoaches out there that would come here and endure the criticism and pissin and moaning from our fans. Not gonna happen.

Ummmm Chip Kelly is available...??

Remember when another former college coach went to NFL and failed...ended up back in college only to become the greatest college coach in history.

Whether people like to admit it or not, a big part of that is we don't dump coaches when we should.

I think looking at history will put this into context. I get that some on here want Tennessee to be Alabama and in doing so you are asking Coach Jones to dominate at a level that Tennessee has NEVER dominated at.

In terms of the history of the SEC title Tennessee has won the second most of all teams. Tennessee last won the SEC in 1998. Yes it has been that long.

- Alabama (2016), 26 SEC titles, 12 Divisional Titles
- Tennessee (1998), 13 SEC titles, 6 Divisional Titles
- Georgia (2005), 12 SEC titles, 7 Divisional Titles
- LSU (2011), 11 SEC titles, 8 Divisional Titles
- Florida (2008), 8 SEC titles, 14 Divisional Titles
- Auburn (2013), 8 SEC titles, 8 Divisional Titles
- Ole Miss (1963), 6 SEC titles, 1 Divisional Title
- Kentucky (1976), 2 SEC titles, 0 Divisional Titles
- Mississippi State (1941), 1 SEC Title, 1 Divisional Title
- Arkansas (Never), 0 SEC titles, 4 Divisional Titles
- Missouri (Never), 0 SEC titles, 2 Divisional Titles
- South Carolina (Never), 0 SEC titles, 1 Divisional Title
- Texas A&M (Never), 0 SEC titles, 0 Divisional Titles
- Vanderbilt (Never), 0 SEC titles, 0 Divisional Titles

The SEC Conference Championship game was started in 1993. Since that time the #of appearances are as follows:

- Florida 12
- Alabama 11
- LSU, Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee all with 5
- Arkansas 3
- Missouri 2
- Mississippi State 1
- South Carolina 1

The 5 appearances for Tennessee were from 1997-2007 with wins in 1997 and 1998. In the last 10 years, 5 different teams have won the east, Tennessee (1), Florida (4), Georgia (2), Missouri (2) and South Carolina (1). During that same time frame 3 different teams have won the west, Auburn (2), LSU (2), Alabama (6). The rep from the east has not won the title game since 2008.

In the last 31 years, the SEC title has been won by 6 different SEC teams (Tennessee, Florida and Georgia from the east and Alabama, Auburn and LSU from the west).

In that 31 year period:

- Tennessee has won the SEC outright only 4 times (1985, 1990, 1997 and 1998). We claimed a shared title in 1989 with Alabama and Auburn.
- Alabama has won 7 plus the tie in 1989, 5 of those are with Saban.
- Florida has won 8 (most of those were with Spurrier and when the East dominated the west)
- Auburn has won 4 + a couple of ties
- LSU has won 5 with a couple of ties (2 of the wins were with Saban)
- Georgia has won 2

That guy at A&M (Sumlin) has a unique contract. They will have to pay him EVERY PENNY OF IT in the event he is fired for anything other than moral turpitude . Moral turpitude is most of what Kiffin engaged in after practice daily- young girls, DUIs , etc. I think Sumlin's still $25 million US dollars - serious money even to Texans.

When did Kiffin get a DUI missed that was it at USC when him and Sark where together first time?

Johnny Majors and Phil Fulmer who started with better situations than Butch would have been fired before their SEC championships with that reasoning.

This is reality coupled with the dominance of two coaches (Saban, Spurrier) in the last 30 years or so. Fulmer was able to win some against Florida and won against Alabama before Saban but he never dominated. Neyland is the only UT coach that really dominated others.

Fulmer won the SEC east title for the first time in his 6th year.

When the east was tougher than it's ever been....context is not your friend lol.

I've realized that you and about 4 other posters jump thread to thread trying to spew sunshine all over Butch's hot butt...however, you're not cooling it off whatsoever.

Very good summary, I think the relevant stats are from the 31 year recent history. This sure made me stop and pause but some people do not want facts.: :good!:

I know the other poster said "IF you can't win the SEC East by year 5 then you probably Don't Belong Here."

That is why I said Fulmer and Majors would have been fired (don't belong here).
