George W Is Gutless..

This is for U-T, since I do feel that he understands that the failure of the local governments contributed greatly to the outcome of Hurricane Katrina: Why was Nagin re-elected? Do you believe that Blanco will be re-elected in 2007?

Wheh, ok...this may be a bit winded but stay with me.

Let me first start off by saying that I did NOT vote for Nagin during re-election but voted for his oppoenet (Mitch L).

But, I will say this....saying Nagin is somehow responsible for Katrina is not only sad but completely untruthful and as of right now, I am not a fan of the man.

Now, let me defend Nagin on the evacuation part. Everyone that wanted to leave New Orleans...left. It's funny to hear people talk about Hurricane Rita and what was the main problem with the storm? The most amount of deaths dealt with people trying to get out of Houston. New Orleans didn't have that problem because the people who were leaving....LEFT. I have no problem with when the evacuation was called. People talk about Nagin telling people to come to the Superdome...simply not true. Nagin and others went on TV and Radio screaming at people to NOT COME TO THE DOME unless you needed emergency help such as criticially ill, ext...

In addition, how could someone expect Nagin to suddenly fix the Canal St. levee? Nobody knew it was going to break nor was he in office when it was built or re-done? Do people not realize the amount of levee's in New Orleans? Nagin had no opportunity to pin-point where a levee would break in New Orleans. Finding a needle in the heystack (sp?) if not harder. In fact, out of most of the levees in the city, the Canal St. levees were some of the newer ones so to say and the OTHER side of the levees held up perfectly. It is just not realistic to expect Nagin or one mayor to find all the holes in the levees and even if you expect so....it would take years at LEAST.

The real fault in Katrina goes towards the past mayors and Gov. in this state. Bush is NOT to blame and the federal government IS NOT TO BLAME.

My only gripe with Bush is appointing Brown the head of FEMA. I thought the Coast Guard and other services did a fantastic job with the situation they were in but the FEMA people were....just ridiculously late when they didn't need to be. But, I am very happy with how the federal government has handled money being sent here. Very happy, actually.

Nagin was the best mayor the city of New Orleans has ever seen Pre-Katrina in his short first term before the storm. Yes, the BEST MAYOR NEW ORLEANS HAS EVER SEEN.

Nagin was the reason why the Police force saw MAJOR changes and firings (and as Katrina showed, a lot more was needed)
Nagin was the reason why the New Orleans school board saw massive changes across the board in power and funding.
Nagin was the reason why the city saw significant improvement in economics due to Nagin connecting with White business owners in downtown New Orleans like no other black mayor had.

Before Katrina, he was doing great.

In the last few months, he has soured on me with his comments on local TV to black people (he said on TV the other day to a crowd of 9th Ward residents that they should build a mansion when they get their federal money to help them rebuild...said it as a joke but is that really funny?) and other assorted decisions.
