George Quarles

I heard him on a radio interview here in Knoxville the other night at 2 am (probably a replay), and he sounded like he genuinely did not want any part of any college job. He says he loves doing what he's doing, and he says he loves most being a dad to his young children. I truly now believe he won't ever do anything but coach at Maryville. And probably be the most successful head coach of all time.

"but so what?"...........Based on his record and performance, there are "NONE" who compare to him......or haven't you noticed? Read much, or follow HS football much?

If he is that good why wouldn't he want to better himself and move on to something more challenging? Answer is.. he is a great high school coach and that is it and he has it made at Maryville High School. He don't want to ruin his reputation by coaching college whether its D3 or any other division. Example is Saban and Spurrier, they are great college coaches but couldn't handle the NFL. That's why they ended up back in college. Quarles knows he is a great high school coach and he cant handle coaching any type of college football program. In other words HE IS SCARED or he would take on the challenge.

I was thinking that if George stayed at Maryville for 20+ more years that he might be high on the HS all time wins chart..no chance of that.(he has around 225) There's a guy in SC that has been coaching the same team since 1952! He has over 600 wins..thats like winning 10 games a year for 60 straight years..thats just incredible

Please stop with the George to get whatever coaching job comes open.

He will retire at Maryville.

I'm not sure that's correct. I do think he stays at MHS until his kids graduate, but that's several years away.
After that, who knows.

Forget about this guy. This is VN not Maryville High Nation. For the life of me I do not understand why Freak let's this high school stuff be posted on here on a college based site. Then East TN fastination with this guy is beyond me. He is a good HS coach but so what. There are a bunch of good HS coaches.

He's definitely not a run of the mill high school coach, but I don't think he's the best ever like some.

Sometimes "stupidity" knows no bounds, as in this post.

Maryville High's recruiting budget is higher than Maryville College's.

The same has been implied about the former Rutherford County coach who now lives in Alcoa. As for Maryville College, they never win because a recruiting budget is practically nonexistent, like many other (maybe most) schools their size. Good try though.

It was a joke dude. I'm well aware that MC has no recruiting budget. Hell, at one point a method of recruiting for baseball was literally the head coach walking around campus asking guys if they played baseball beyond little league.

I knew it was a joke. For some reason murrville fans are the easiest people to upset.

They have good football and baseball teams of late plus players get scholarships plus it cost around 50 to go to school there now plus the school has topped ranked professors and the school is ranked high constantly. Get your facts straight.

plus players get scholarships

With Maryville College being an NCAA Division 3 member, they are not allowed to give athletic scholarships by NCAA rules. Student/athletes there are eligible for the same academic scholarships and need based financial aid that non student/athletes are, but not athletic scholarships.

Why all the hate on GQ? He's a really good person who has chosen his family over his own personal glory by going to coach college. He has a six figure income, great job security and every night he gets to see his wife and kids. Who wouldn't want that? If he went to a big university he would make more money but sacrifice seeing his family. I think it's a wise choice on his part

They do not offer athletic scholarships at MC. Get your facts straight. Also, I didn't blast their academics.

It's really surprised me over the years that there hasn't been one FBS program to offer him a shot at being a position coach or something. I've always wondered over the years if Fulmer reached out to Quarles and offered him a job? I know that George has said in the past, that he really likes being the coach of the Rebels and his family couldn't see them living anywhere else. It's just hard to believe with his numbers that some FBS program hasn't offered him through the years. Thoughts?
