We cant say enough about the job that James Franklin and his staff have done down at Vanderbilt, and none of that would be possible without a solid secondary to shut down the diverse attacks of the SEC. Defensive coordinator Bob Shoop (who handles the safeties), and George Barlow (defensive backs coach) are the two guys in charge of the back end of the defense for the Commodores, and have done a tremendous job developing the talent necessary to compete in the toughest conference in the country. Vandy ranks 7th nationally in pass efficiency defense (99.77) and 18th in both total defense (326 ypg) and scoring defense (18 ppg). The Commodores also round out the top ten nationally in pass defense, allowing just 176 yards per game through the air. Once these guys get a chance to sit down and make some adjustments at the half, they get even better. In the second half of games, Vanderbilt allowed opponents to complete passes just 48 percent of the time (fourth nationally), and accounted allowed just three second half touchdowns (fifth nationally) on the year. In the SEC coordinators have their work cut out for them whether theyre trying to gain yards, or trying to stop offenses from rolling them up. And with guys like Barlow and Shoop on in your corner, you have to like your secondarys chances on game day.
