has a column on Kareem Cooper in today's Commercial Appeal that should be mandatory reading for all college sports fans. commercialappeal.com redirect.
If you couldn't identify the racial undertones of the intial letter to the editor, you might want to pay more attention in the future.Sorry, but he lost me @ "Oh, by the way, Bradshaw happens to be white", like that has anything to do with anything.
Dane is an outstanding student and a superb role model for young basketball players, the color of his skin means nothing, and the letter to the editor didnt bring it up, shame the columnist is itching for readers so bad that he had to...
The Blind Side, the latest Michael Lewis book, does a great job of telling the Michael Oher story.Very revealing article. Thanks for putting that up there for all of us to see. There is also a guy in Memphis, Sean Tuohey, who played basketball at Ole Miss, is a successful businessman and the TV color analyist for the Grizzlies. Tuohey (who is white) took a lost black youth into his home and later adopted him. He is now a starting offensive tackle at Ole Miss with a bright future.

Exactly what event "triggered" the letter writer? Did he miss the fact that we were the team assessed multiple technicals in the Memphis game? Did he miss Jujuan Smith getting tossed from the UNC game? Tony Passley's technicals and arrest? The writer's intent and mindset are patently obvious to anyone reading the letter. Typical of the mindset of the idiot fringe of the UT fan base that makes us all look bad. I guess it's just coincidence he used Bradshaw as a shining example instead of Chris Lofton.Had the author of the letter called them thugs and there hadnt been any event triggering it, THEN I'd see racial undertones, calling them thugs simply for being black...
But that was not the case, obviously there was an incident(s) that triggered the calling of that name, therefore the color of their skin really doesnt play a role for me.
It's sort of like Bammers and gators calling our guys thugs when we had all our problems... Did you think they were racist? No, you didnt, they had a reason to say it, well, so did this person.

Kareem Cooper didn't play against UT. In fact, when that mental midget wrote his letter, Cooper had yet to play in a game this year. Therefore, I'm pretty sure he was talking about the Memphis players who participated in the Tennessee game.Well, from what I read, I figured the suspension and "water pistol" incident the article referred to probably did... I dont live in that area, so I dont know all the ins and outs.
Honestly, the guy or girl sounds like a Memphis res who may be a UT fan, and just hates Memphis b/c he lives there and puts up with some crap... He sounds rediculous, and his letter didnt seem to have much thought put in it, seeing that he referenced their players not taking the ACT, even though its required... Therefore, I dont think he put THAT much thought into it.
Once again, I dont just assume he is referring to skin color, b/c I have reason to think that... I go back to the ideal of, do you think other team's fans are racist when they call our football players thugs? Or Miami's players thugs? I call Miami THUG U all the time, does that make me racist? What if I say, "man, Peyton Manning would never get involved in a brawl", Peyton is white, Im calling them thugs, am I racist? Why didnt I use Al Wilson?

You'll have to answer those questions for yourself.
The vast majority of idiots who call Miami players thugs are in fact racists. However, they're so wrong on the facts that I generally don't deign to waste my time exposing their bigotry. I let them make fools of themselves. No reason for me to do it for them. Why dont you?
If you can determine his letter had something to do with race simply b/c he used the word THUG and referenced a white player from the other team, then why cant you step up to my example? Is it b/c you know that MANY MANY people call Miami's players thugs and they arent racist? Or b/c it's ok for you to call someone a thug if you feel justified, but not others, b/c then they are racist?

I'm simply saying anyone who would claim Miami is a "thug program" is so galactically ignorant of the facts, which show Miami players get in less off field trouble and graduate at a much higher rate than most high profile programs, that I really don't have any reason to give their opinion any attention.Wait a minute... Are you saying there are a set of facts out there that would make me think Miami doesnt have more "thugs" on their football than any other school in America??? I think you may be a little mixed up on the facts yourself... The word "thug" isnt racist, as much as many would like to make it.
Who was the hockey player? Bertuzzi? Who took a cheap shot and almost killed a guy... He was white, and EVERYONE in the media, EVERYONE i heard talk about him, called him a thug. Fact is, you act like a thug, you'll be called one, no matter your skin color. If you dont want to be called a thug, dont act like one.
I knew there was a reason I like you.I applaud Mr. Wilson. He is a positive roll model.Don't be fooled, racism is still around and not just in the south. That's why I feel good knowing I am a person who has also stepped up and helped guide a then 17 year old African American kid who witnessed his mom die in his arms from crack overdose, who went temporarily astray, but is on the straight path several years later. He knows he can rely on me.He also knows some people are talkers, backstabbers and ignorant, such as the guy who wrote the letter to the editor concerning thugs (stirring the pot).I also have worked lock up with juveniles and there are white kids locked up who represent thug.
