General Neyland and Phillip Fulmer

I'd argue that mark Richt walked into something similar to what cpf did. Jim Donnan actually did a pretty good job of rebuilding.

You can't be serious.

I think I and everyone else so far has disproved you notion that Fulmer was the only coach to ever inherit a good program.

First head coaching job anywhere at a college program at the level TN was when Fulmer took over? I don't think so. Battle's scenerio was close.

Lloyd Carr won a national title 2 years after taking over.
That is more than comparable.

Dickey was 46-15-4 not 45-15-4 in 65 games, 6 years. He never had the success at uFa that he had here.

Bill Battle inherited a program just as worthy as what Phil received. Battle was 59-22-2 over seven years. Johnny was, well Johnny. He took a 6-5 team to new levels at 4-7 in 77, blaming Battle every week for six years. His 80, 82, 88 teams skewed badly. It was up for a year and right back down the next until 89,90,91. Neyland would have canned him in 80. His very best was his last, but in 92 his antics the 3rd week of Oct. did him in.

John Barnhill had a grerat four year run when the General went to the Pacific Theatre in WWII. Barnhill was 32-5-2. Phil really did do great early on. But...the General would have fired him many years earlier than he was allowed to stay, had he been alive and kicking. It was all Neyland. Split Johnny's best and Phil best with Dickeys and Battle's and that is really it.

Outside Neyland, Dickey was more consistent and was moving up each year for his full tenure. Phil only hit from 1995-99 with one rise in 01. It was all over when we lost to Mayland and Clumpson. That was the tell.

Larry Coker is laughing at the fact you think Fulmer inherited the best situation of all time. So is Barry Switzer. Nobody detests Fulmer more than I, but your premise is pure crap.

A quick point many of you don't realize.

The best run under Majors had a lot to do with two assistants: Cutcliffe and Phil Fulmer. Johnny is a TN Legend, no doubt, but when Fulmer came in, he took Johnny's best run as TN coach (over 20 years mind you) and he made it even better. And Phil was a huge part of Johnny's best run.

We have won at least 2 SECC every decade with the exception of 70's and 00's.

Majors was 116-62-8 with 3 SECC

Dickey was 45-15-4 with 2 SECC

This is where that nuanced appreciation of history helps, Darth VolDad.

If Fulmer could win SECCs like Johnny, he has at least three (and one this decade). I haven't done all the maths, but I suspect he has an extra Sugar Bowl and deserved Co-Champ crown in the Old Money too.

Criteria: Never been a head coach before, anywhere. Fulmer was the classic man of good fortune. No first head coaching job ever comapared to the seas that parted for Fulmer. Bottom line, Majors rebuilt the program. Fulmer squandered it with his complacency and lack of discipline.

While I am not the biggest Fulmer fan (I agree, he got lazy, arrogant, and complacent since the NC), he was able to get over the Alabama obstacle when Majors was not. Of course, it took Fulmer having a team of future NFL all pros to do so.

This (except replace giggle with laugh) \/

It's so easy to refute this that I'm just going to giggle to myself instead.

Again, Barry Switzer is laughing at you.

weve won the most games of any program since 1925. You can argue the significance of that but it certainly means we have been a top tier program.

I would agrue that the Nebraska program inherited by Frank Solich was in much better shape that the UT program PF took over. Hell, Nebraska was coming off 2 national championships in 3 years when Osborne took it over.

Majors already came here with a Natl Championship so we know he could do it! he futher cemented his Legacy what he did here

i don't understand the revisionism regarding fulmer.

fulmer won 10 games or more in 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2007.

bottom line, some of those "declining" years fulmer had were better than majority of seasons in tennessee history. tennessee has 20 seasons with 10 or more wins in its history. fulmer has nine of them.

if you think that is easy because more games are played now, i encourage you to count how many seasons tennessee goes through before having another ten win season.

it will be fun to follow this board to see how long one of the best coaches tennessee ever had is blamed for tennessee's current state of affairs

Butch Davis stocked Miami with talent before taking off to the Browns. Coker came in and won with it for 4 years. Didn't have any success after that.
hence the reason I brought up Larry Coker.
