Gavin Bryant to fullback?

TE does not equal FB. An H-Back, maybe.

Smash mouth football is played with a Fullback. Sam (Bam Bam) Henderson, Pete Panuska, Greg Amsler, both Bartholomews and Shawn Bryson were all good ones.

I never understood why any offense would go away from a full house backfield set in short yardage and goal line situations. Who exactly is fooled by the read option that close?

William Howard was sure fun to watch. He was primarily a tailback but was a load to tackle. I remember a game - against Ole Miss I think - where Howard ran out the last 5 - 6 minutes of the game 3 and 4 yards at a carry.

We use Wolf as a lead fullback type blocker in many running sets. Alex Ellis did it as well.

You are correct. We rarely run the ball without an tight end or hback as the lead blocker. They function as a fullback, but line up to give them blocking angles that an I formation full back cannot achieve.

People got away from it because it is predictable and allows the defense to play run only. Spreading the defense out with a spread offense makes the defense play honest. We also haven't had the players in the trenches to out power a defense in the SEC. Our wide receivers haven't played well enough to demand help in coverage. Going full house isn't always the best option when you don't have the skill sets to beat a team off the line with your power.

The glimpses of a lead blocker (TE) for Hurd against Northwestern looked good and was smart play calling. Hurd is a north/south runner and Northwestern didnt expect it and didnt prepare. If TN coaches were smart they would definitely use the I in their offense.

If anything I hope they will stop running sweeps with Hurd against the good defenses. Sweeps are for backs like Kamara

After watching all of this spread stuff all the time, fullback is now probably my favorite position in football

Gruden asked "where in the hell is your fullback".

Butch replies, "Mike, get the fullback in there"

I have never understood the use of the shotgun on 4 and goal inside the 1.

I completely agree with the I formation in this senario!

Man, I agree with you -- but Panuska was not a fullback, as best as I can recall.

I would say GB is buried on the LB depth chart with 2 classes recruiting over him. Butch may be giving him a shot to see the field in a few short yardage packages. Doubtfully more.

I think they like TEs even in the under center stuff because is gives them more options in a set. A dedicated "lead blocker" limits to a power only set. That allows the D to zero in on that power as well.
A functioning TE in a power set allows power as well as the threat of the pass. Keeps D more balanced and less dedicated to the power run.
One of the best gains (bowl game) when UT lined up under center with an H back was a pass down the middle to the tight end. Amazing how much a power run game helps the QB by forcing the safeties to think run.

Love the offset I formation in the bowl game. Most of them went for big gains including a PA pass to TE.
