Gavin Bryant to fullback?

It certainly suggest that the Vols are up for experimenting with different backfield sets, which in my opinion, is a very good thing. With Alvin Kamara and Jalen Hurd as the featured backs for the Vols again in 2016, Tennessee football is really going to be fun to watch!

I love the fullback position. I played it in high school- nothing like getting a head of steam and absolutely crushing someone on defense.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to have a lead blocker in short-yardage situations. I've often wondered, and maybe I completely missed it, why they don't use Hurd and Kamara in the same backfield more often. Numerous plays could be run from this formation making it very hard to defend. Then again, my football knowledge is very limited.

It's probably not something we'll see a ton of, but like you I think having a variety of sets from which to run the football is a good thing. Just like what we saw in the bowl game.

I've wondered the same thing, especially with the triple option I figured would be devastating

Bryson could absolutely fly. I don't think the same can be said of Gavin. His strength, IMHO, will be his ability to move an LB out of Hurd's way if his move to fullback is indeed legit.

I once saw Bryson in street clothes; I couldn't believe a guy of that size could move that fast.

Shows Butch is open to DeBord's thinking? Sounds diff than the ol "were going to run our system" philosophy they used with Worley. I think Butch is adapting well to the SEC

Shawn and Mose were skill players to being with. They could run and catch out of the backfield, as well as block.

Not sure Gavin offers those tangible running back skills as a fullback and will not present the threat Shawn Bryson and Mose Phillips posed to an opposing defense.

Yep, Bryson was Detroit's starting RB for a couple years. I don't think he even played FB in the NFL.

Kamaras TD in the USC game was in this formation iirc. Hurd leading the way.

Been some time, but I think Greg Amsler was a fullback and once they started to use him to carry the ball, he demolished defenders.

I like the idea of using a fullback, especially when they get to carry the mail.

I would say GB is buried on the LB depth chart with 2 classes recruiting over him. Butch may be giving him a shot to see the field in a few short yardage packages. Doubtfully more.

I think they like TEs even in the under center stuff because is gives them more options in a set. A dedicated "lead blocker" limits to a power only set. That allows the D to zero in on that power as well.
A functioning TE in a power set allows power as well as the threat of the pass. Keeps D more balanced and less dedicated to the power run.

The fullback dive is nearly unstoppable in Madden this year. :)
