Gator Tailgating

I know every crowd has some a-holes but I do think the reputation is a bit overblown. I went to knoxville last year and wasn't harassed at all (though you all pretty much blew and I'm not sure anyone had the stamina to fight anymore). I hope you all experience the same courtesy when you visit (apologize in advance if that's not the case). I think generally if you're cool about handling the verbal harassment, you'll be respected and left alone. TN fans for some reason have a bad rep and probably get more harassment than most other visiting teams.

It will be brutally hot on the east side of the stadium so drink lots of water, wear light colors and bring sunglasses. Ditto comments re: open container. our reputation for having the worst cops in the SEC IS well deserved unfortunately. They suck. You can tailgait anywhere on campus though certain areas near the stadium and along University avenue are reserved for boosters. This was a big mistake in my mind as the atmosphere has suffered since they made the change.

Hope you enjoy the experience.

The stories are not overblown. The last time I was there (Vols victory in 2003), our group was hit in the back with a football, had gum spit into our car, was challenged by drunken Gator fans to a behind-the-bar fight, and endured other minor low-class insults.

That being said, I did NOT have a drink thrown on me. Only in Athens have I been hit by a cup of liquid...and it was dip-spit. Again...after a Vols victory. Nothing like a little humility.

You weren't harassed because most Vol fans, besides drunk Frat guys have some class, and have been winners for years and generally like the area they live and don't want it to be seen as a bad place to visit. It has nothing to do with how good your team is, and one would think that if your team is really so great, you could let them do the talking on the field. Maybe they should be appreciative of outsiders spending money in that crap hole you all call a city. The problem is there are a bunch of transplanted worthless yankees coming in that have no respect for anything or anyone, and are generally looking to show their ass. I have never seen so many drunk old people cussing families with kids. Large groups of men that were not Frat age, challenging much smaller groups of UT fans. Throwing beers at families and others. Seen 10 guys cussing and getting in a guys face with his family there, and all they were doing was walking to the game in UT gear and were saying nothing. Never had piss thrown at me, but I have no doubt in my mind that it has happened. My personal car was vandalized and I had no UT stuff on it, just a Knox County license plate. All the cars around there that had UT stuff were vandalized, there flags broken, etc. I've been to every venue in the SEC, and other places, and the overwhelming bad apples at Florida do not come close to comparing to the other places. Of course there are bad ones every where, including UT, but there is nothing close to Gainesville, and the worst fan base in the country. My 2 trips there were both like this, and I refuse to go back. I will go to many other places and spend my money to watch the Vols play, but I would never go back there again. And yes, I have been harassed some at other places, as I expect it, but the UF fan base is in a "class" by itself.

Also anyone know how the seats in section 49 are?

That's the largest UT section in the SE corner of the stadium. Pretty good seats if you ask me.

The other two visitor sections are directly behind the UT bench, and the top 5-6 rows of the upper deck north end zone....you need a sherpa to get to those seats.

We also behead hostages and eat the flesh of rival fan's children. :whatever:

And that was Charleston Southern week.

is there any place you recommend for tailgating around campus that would be out of the way from most students?

Not that I've ever been to an SEC football game, but...

If I had to pick any year to not go to the swamp for a game, this would be it.

fortunately (maybe) one guy going with us is a gator fan, so i'll put his car flag up during the game and take it up immediately after

one thing to remember when walking to the stadium is part of the ut section is near their student section. so when you are walking into the gates you have to put up with a lot of talk, but it's not as bad as they seem to think when they are saying it. you just have to ignore it. be careful of the older people though. i was at the game 2 years ago and my buddy was spit on by some old man and then cussed out for doing nothing. it's a crazy experience for 1st timers

Until Two Bits signs off as having seen these incidents, they didn't happen. It's all just overstated or imagined.

I would have been your best man at your wedding because I'm pretty sure there weren't any present.

There weren't any what present? That would have been decent had you not jacked up the singular vs plural thing.

Were you really trying to pretend UF is a good school. If it is now (it isn't), it had damn sure changed since it admitted you.

there is a huge lot to park and plenty of space to tailgate, jj finley elementary school, address is 1912 n.w. 5th avenue, volunteer parents and staff from the school monitor the area and have never witnessed a problem....it is hot down here and as everyone else has said drink a lot of water in between adult beverages, you will be in the sun the entire game...i have limited parking at my house which is about 1/2 mile from the stadium, but i wont charge ya and have no concerns about the safety of your vehicle....address is 2617 nw 3rd ave...just give me a shout on here if you need anything....gl to you all

I thought JJ Finley was only available if you bought the season pass to park there. I know that has been the policy for the last several years, however, if I'm wrong it is a great spot to park. There is zero problem for alcohol, which holds true everywhere in G'ville on gameday as long as you don't get outside of your tailgate area with booze, if you do they WILL write you a ticket. (They don't arrest you anymore, it's just a citation)
Have a great time!

is section 49 by the band? I don't want to fight any gator fans but I am one of those people that like to blare rocky top pulling up to the stadiums. Guess thats not a good idea. I also will probably put a florida flag on my car when i go in the stadium. I will take it down immediately after and put my orange back on. I have heard about people's cars being keyed and everything. That is ridiculous, but then again it could just be a rumor. GO VOLS! BEAT FLORIDA!

I you guys believe half the stuff you read about The Swamp, I'd expect the UT section to be empty on Saturday.

Don't believe the hype.

Lawrence, Let me guess. Your one of those "fans" that doesn't like their team after a loss? There will be lots of TN fans there. GO VOLS!

anyone have any info or advice about parking at the Oaks Mall?

That's actually a sound plan.

There are shuttle buses running between the mall and the stadium. Not sure how much it costs, but parking is more sparse than ever this year due to construction on campus and curb spots going away.
