Gas Prices and Attendance!!

Prices are forcing a lot of us to make choices we’ve never had to make. At 54 I’m making more money than I’ve ever made, but I suddenly find myself having to prioritize activities. I don’t see myself going to game this year unless Vols end up in the Liberty Bowl.

Agree about priorities and attending games is mine. Call me crazy, I just love supporting the Vols and the experience of being at Neyland. For me, it’s not just the gas. There’s hotel and food, both of which have sky-rocketed in price. I’ve thought of ways to cut back on other costs.

Understand completely. I travel a lot for work, and the expense report now compared to prior is crazy. For me, duck hunting is a whole lot more important than attending a ball game I can watch on television. Driving across the state to attend home games at current prices would eat WAY too much of my fun budget. If I were close enough to Knoxville to drive to the game and home in the same day it would be a whole different deal.

With these outrageous gas prices, will it affect your attendance at Neyland this season?
When I was younger, I had a friend who's mom and dad were very wealthy. I once asked Jim, "why do you have all of your businesses on the poor side of town"? His response, " people always have $$'s to spend on things they don't need". I think that applies here. While yes, I have taken steps to offset the cost of gas, the cost of gas will not keep me from going to the games.

Sure, and there are things I’ll spend on until it hurts. Considering gas is currently costing me about $180 per month more than a year ago (haven’t had the guts yet to figure out everywhere else inflation is hitting me), it’s enough of a hit I have to consider where to cut corners financially. Little things like driving 80 miles to check on something just because I feel like it, running my bass boat 30 miles just to fish somewhere different and taking a four hour pontoon ride are more rare, and everyone in my duck club is talking about planning travel together to minimize gas.

I certainly respect those who prioritize attending home games over other expenditures, but taking a day off, driving across the state, paying 30% more for a room and similar to eat out just isn’t heavy enough on the fun scale for me.

I’m just driving over once for the opener, heading down to Atlanta in early December, then I’ll drive home. Wife said only one round trip to Neyland this year, so it’ll just be a couple of months to complete it. We’ll probably both be happier.

I will probably cut down to one home game this year as opposed to my normal two. Will then evaluate the bowl game and opponent and go from there.

Home slate with exception of Florida is not really sexy this year in addition to the gas prices. I have no real fantasies about beating Bama or UGA so I'm not even considering those games.

That was Bobby Denton.
That guy was great on the stadium PA system. In addition to "pay these prices and pay no more," he also announced "it's football time in Tennessee!" before the game. And before the jumbotrons (and now phones), he would update scores of other games over the PA system at certain intervals during down minutes. It was different (for those who never heard it) because it was something all the fans learned together, and the crowd would cheer or boo the scores! He had a way with timing and would pause right before the second team's score, leaving everyone in suspense for a second, and setting up the moment when the crowd cheered or booed. Sometimes the reaction was mixed.

Just thinking out loud. Form a home game collective to rent a paddle wheel riverboat built for hotel-like accommodations instead of being a floating casino. Collectively bargain for rates 50% or less than local hotels, and just maybe include a dining area for quality pre- and post-game meals. Or maybe ole Dan White can have Ut purchase such a boat or two to do this. It's probably the best option since the S.H.I.E.L.D helicarrier is unavailable due to being a quasi-military asset.
Liked for the perfect marvel and comics reference

As long as I can afford it comfortably, I'm going. Outside of that, itd take losing my job or very poor money management to not go. I dont plan on either of those 2 thongs happening.

No, the cost of gas won't keep me away.

The outrageous cost of tickets, however...maybe.
