That is what we should be looking for in a coach. I do not want to see us get boat raced by Oregon next year ( may happen regardless). I just don't see Sal and Dooley being able to turn the defense around.

Outside of recruiting hiring Patterson would be more exciting to me than Gruden. I know that sounds crazy but with Patterson he's already up to speed and knows the grind and has the connections with recruits. Gruden's main plus is his name and that SB ring but he hasn't dealt with the daily grind of CFB or any HC position in a long time.

imo patterson would be a great pick. i'd take him over gruden.

when kitty bailed on us i said that the solution was to take the UT plane to fort worth and not come back until CGP had signed a contract, regardless of how much money it took.

i still think that's a good plan. gas up and go.

Gary Patterson TCU- last 4 seasons in top 15. 3 of last 4 years in top 7 BCS. Had the #1 rated Defense 4 years in a row!!!!! Good speaker. Took TCU which was a dumster fire and has led them into becoming a good program. Just think what he could do with the facilities at UT.

I thought, initially, that the talk was about how this guy would never leave TCU. Now I'm hearing more possibility that he could be in-play. If so, I want him!

Actually Patterson took over TCU from Dennis Franchione, who went 10-1 his last year there. That said, I think he would be an excellent hire, as close to a slam dunk as you can get without the name "Gruden". (Of course, Patterson was DC when Franchione was there, so maybe that's what you meant)

Patterson would be a great hire...but it won't happen.

Not that my word is gold...but I lived in the Ft. Worth area for 28 years....and I've got some connections to people at TCU who are close to Coach Patterson (let's just say blood is thicker than water!). He loves Ft. Worth and TCU...and his family has no desire to move. He's had many opportunities to leave for 'better' opportunities...and passed on every one (you'd need more than a couple of hands to count them all). Not saying he'd never leave...but I don't see it happening.

If Gruden did not come, Patterson is my first call. Contrary to some beliefs, he interviewed with Hamilton and was not offered. Hamilton chose Kiffin instead.

Patterson knows the score in the Big 12. If you are not Texas or Oklahoma you are down the list. Unequal league revenue sharing plus the Longhorn Network stuff. It has turned into a revised version of the old Southwest Conference. If UT reached out, he would seriously consider it. He has no upside where he is now.

He interviewed for the job here, when Kiffin was hired (Hamilton thought Kiffin + Monte would be the Big Splash everyone was looking for), and a Dallas area media guy told Tony Basilio on his (ESPN Radio) show, that Patterson was still interested the last time, but was insulted by something Hamilton said previously (implied that he wasn't hired cause he was too much like Fulmer), and for that reason, the price went up.

Hamilton was looking for a Bruce Pearl type...a Diamond in the Rough...and on the cheap. With a different administration and a team loaded with talent on both sides of the ball (this defense sucks because of coaching...it consists mostly of 4-5* recruits). It has to be attractive to a coach like Patterson, who is probably ready to take the next step.

All he has to do is win the SEC East (very doable with good coaching), and he is one game from a NC appearance.

Patterson would be my No.2 as well...but I really think Jim Tressel is one of those "Scratch and Dent" deals, so to speak, that is just too hard to pass up.

Do you pay through the nose for a Top tier coach, or do you take a small chance on a Top tier coach who has a "scratch" on him....a scratch that goes away after 5 games into the season?

I mean, we are talking about a coach with a resume that rivals Saban and Meyers. To me, that's a no brainer. The guy can recruit like Saban, too.

The best part about this...and a point that is lost on most, is that we could get Tressel for pennies on the dollar, which in turn means the AD can instead invest much more heavily on his staff. This is actually a major selling point IMO. He can lure a top notch coordinator with not only more $$$, but also with the prospect of being the Interim HC for 5 games (if UT doesn't request a reduction or waiver from the NCAA in a Show Cause meeting). That would give an OC or DC a good chance to showcase their leadership abilities and enhance their resume in the future.

I could of swore that tressel has a show cause and can't coach in the FBS for a little while

This is what I don't understand. You can explain it until blue in the face and people will still come back with the fallacious argument that "Show Cause" = Ban from coaching.

It can be if the penalty is severe enough. But in cases like Tressel's, the penalty is light enough to be nothing but a slap on the wrist. And THAT is what we have here. A small scratch, as it were...and nothing more.

He already paid the penalty as an assistant coach for the Colts, last year. So, any team interested in hiring him would likely be able to get that 5 game penalty waived, by the NCAA.

They can either send a letter to the NCAA stating that they will comply with the penalties, or they can appear before a "Show Cause" panel to....Show a Cause to remove or reduce the penalty. That's it.

If we were talking about Saban, here, under the same circumstances...most would say "Hell yeah...take the 5 games and Git R Done!"

Was undefeated until starting QB [3rd year as starter] was kicked off team for DUI. Then lost 3 out of 4 but back to winning again. Remember last year when Bray went out. 3 losses when you loose starting qb after 4 games is understandable.

I want Him as our coach. Great Defensive mind. Would take our talent and make it a good Defense!!!
