Garner interested in coming back to Tennessee

depends on which board you are on or which talk show you listen to or tv station. Yes he is a option but how much with CDD is an 400K to 800K question. He is and his wife is not. A divorce would cost him more. He would have a high buyout to pay her. So I really do not think he is an option because this is a package deal. JMO.

Dooley have a heart and get Garner.

I hope I am wrong but, my bet is Garner is playing us for another pay raise and in the end he stays at UGA. Garner is a excellent coach and great recruiter, but he has a history of throwing out bait and making UGA match any offer.

Definitely closer to Atlanta than Knoxville is. Most people who "live in Atlanta" are 30-45 minutes from downtown.

I meant the ratio of athens to atlanta in comparison to like Knoxville to Nashville (I believe I-40 is 1 1/2 hours no?)

I get your point but Athens is really kinda far away to be considered a suburb

Well from my understanding Garner was promised the DC position, if things didn't work out with Martinez and as you can see Garner was never offered the DC position by Richt. If Dooley offers a co DC deal to Garner, I would assume he would take it.

Richt said throughout the entire DC search that "Rodney is not a candidate for the job and he knows that."

I would certainly think that Rodney would jump at the chance to be the DC of the Vols, but you have got to ask yourself why you would want him if he did not even get an interview for the job at UGA when they were looking.

It is interesting that Auburn gave him an interview for the HC job last year, but I have always believed that was to be able to say they interviewed black coaches.

Rodney is a recruiter that can relate to some kids culturely better than some other recruiters can.

I would be happy for him if he got a shot as DC of the Vols, but that would be a huge risk for Coach Dooley to take at this point.

It was reported sometime in the past week that Georgia coach Rodney Garner was interested in coaching at Tennessee. It would be a huge get, but did any of the coaching staff interview him? Was it just another rumor? With his recruiting knowledge and success and defensive mind wouldn't he be a great fit for this team?

Well like I said before, I've been told that if we offer Garner it would be a co DC deal between him and Thompson. Which IMO wouldn't be as much of a risk as hiring Garner as the DC himself.

I would guess a decision like that would not be made without consulting whoever the new DC ends up being.

Any of you guys have a probable timeline on hiring a DC. I would guess there is a sense of urgency with National Signing Day approaching.

Well im guessing a hire could be made by this weekend, I think Dooley's next move will be within the NFL. Karl Dunbar is who I think we will get in the end. He's currently coaching D line for the Minnesota Vikings, and was on staff with Dooley at LSU. He has a pretty impressive resume and would be a great hire for DC.

I guess that makes you a Saints Fan this weekend. :)

FWIW...per my Dawg contact that has known CDD since law school, Searles and Garner aren't coming.

Somebody needs to make decisions--you can't have two people doing it.

Ace Recruiter Turns Down Tennessee, Sticks With Richt

Garner was interview by X and turned Down Tennessee, above is the article. Garner is not coming, forget about it. I don't see Garner as a DC and he has already turned down a 150,000 raise to come to Tennessee as an assistant.

Circumstances have changed since then. A new DC with a new defensive scheme, new faces at other positions on the defensive side. You never know when there might be a personality conflict with members of the new staff. That said, I don't see him coming unless offered a DC position, and I'm sure he would switch for that.

Garner is a tough fit anyway...as you almost have to hand him the DC spot, that he's been passed over for...and it could well be that he's just not DC material...just like Kippy Brown is not HC material (not at this point). Some guys are just good position coaches and that's it....but you can't tell some of them that.
