Garner interested in coming back to Tennessee

reports out of UGA has always been that Garner was never interested in being a DC. He is happy doing what he does.

Kirby wouldn't come to Georgia because it wasn't even a lateral move for him. Why would he leave what he has in Alabama to play for a coach on his way out the door in a year or two?

I don't understand people saying richt is on his way out the door. The man has had two bad seasons since he has been at uga. And by a bad season I mean 7-5 beating a top ten team and a bowl win. I think if he would have refused to get rid of Willie then he probably would have got fired. We have a new defensive staff that is already better than Willie and they haven't been on the field. Richt is gonna be at uga untill he is ready to leave.

Chris Low on The Nation said he talked to Garner today and Garner said he not heard from DD but would be interested in coaching at UT again.

from TOS.

Unless Garner knows he is not coming back to geargia, I just dont see him making those comments to Low, those things are usually done quietly thru contacts. Do you have a link? Why would Garner make those comments and take a chance of losing his georgia job and not even knowing if CDD is going to call? just no way he said that to CL to let it leak out in the media.

Why would they not be okay with the role of the other? That doesn't even make sense. You think Lance Thompson stayed on board under the understanding that he was getting the DC job?? No. It did not happen, so why would he be upset if they hired Garner as the D-line coach?

Whatever your response was meant to be, it seems to not relate at all whatsoever to what I said.

Every attempt will be made to hire a good, solid defensive coordinator. Until that fails, they would not look to Thompson or Garner.

Sab can you clear this up by explaining what you think it looks like to have Garner and LT happy on staff with neither being a DC?

I cannot picture,

HC Dooley
OC Chaney
DC (some guy who is not famous as a DC or recruiter but who had success in the WAC)
DLine coach Rodney Garner
LB coach Lance Thompson

If neither guy is recruiting coordinator or assistant head coach or whatever other title is important in getting them a shot at being a head coach (which is more important to Garner IMO than LT) than I do not see how you get both on staff.

I don't understand your reasoning at all. I don't know why it would be difficult for a Linebackers coach and a D-line coach to be on the same staff together. You're not making much sense.

To become a head coach there is typically an ascension through the ranks. Neither of these guys have been even defensive coordinators at this level. Thompson is already on staff and is committed to staying. Garner is exiting a job that he has been trying to leave for years.

Yeah, I keep going over and over it and I have no clue where you are coming from with this.

Heard last BH say last night that he wasn't so sure that Dooley would extend an offer to Garner...

You don't seem to be from around here (a UGA fan I presume?) So I'll inform you that "The Nation" is a radio show so no, I do not have a link. If you want to go to the Animal's website and try and find one, you are more than welcome to do so.

I heard it on The Nation last night too. I had already started two threads so I figured someone else would start this one. Chris Low’s quote was that Garner was “extremely interested”. Also, the UGA fans on the DawgRant say he’s as good as gone.

Now why would Garner or ANY assistant make a statement like this? I'd think it would really anger your current boss. He does "own" GA recruiting circles & it'd be good to see him back at UT.

Maybe I just heard too many rumblings that Garner was angry he was not given a shot at DC at Georgia.

You think Garner does not care about being a DC and is just tired of being at Georgia? That may be the case.

I would be thrilled if Garner and Lance would both be on the staff and would not be mad about not getting a promotion, just getting some more money.

Of course he CARES about being a DC. Of course that's a goal. That has nothing to do with anything here though. I'm sure he'd be more than thrilled if we were to somehow offer him the DC job here. I'm sure he'd take it in a heartbeat.

The story here though is that he is unhappy at Georgia and has been looking to leave for some time. Being spurned for the DC job there and not even being a legitimate candidate simply adds fuel to the fire and makes a lateral move to UT more possible especially considering the uncertainty that surrounds Mark Richt at present.

I know Garner is a recruiting legend. The Vols are rebuilding and cleaning house. I would rather have some new blood.

then you must want to hire who ? you want the RC from furman? tn or no other school in their right mind turns Garner down.

Sab, any new news on Garner or any other coaches we are looking to hire?

No and I wouldn't anticipate any right away. Dooley is on the road with Thompson recruiting. He's still trying to work on a staff, but recruiting is the priority.

Hubbs just said that he was setting up interviews while on the road and not to expect a hire today. He did seem to think that in the next couple of days there might be something happening. Sab, this might have already been asked, but have you heard if Dooley has or will be speaking to Garner?

Pay the man what he wants. He is worth every penny. Take this from a South Ga Vol. He is a legend and the parents Trust him with their kids. :dance2:
