Garner interested in coming back to Tennessee

That's gotta be coach speak, but if not he was pretty much putting up a billboard for wanting to come to UT or his most likely agenda was to spit/throw mud in CMR face for not giving him a chance at DC.

Georgia is CRITICAL for our recruiting strategy, and I don't care what anybody says, nobody knows it better or has more contacts than Rodney Garner. Period. The Georgia Bulldogs being down in the 90's is the most important reason for us being where we were in the late 90's. It's the closest and most talent rich area that we have the greatest chance stealing recruits from. SIGN CRG NOW!!!!

+1 Get CRG if at all possible. Give him 500K, it would be a steal. Could rename GA. as TN. south in recruiting.

I think the Garner situation is more complex than most realize.

First, is he qualified/talented enough to be DC? Richt obviously doesn't think so, or he would have gotten that job by now. DC is an important position, to say the least. You don't just give it to someone because they can recruit--or Dooley would have been a coordinator for Saban, and he wasn't. This is the nut problem with Garner. He wants to move up--and only by becoming a coordinator can you do that. He's been around quite a long time now--when you are repeatedly passed for a coordinator job, other coaches notice.

Second, one probably can't be both DC and recruiting coordinator. I mean, you can--but that's two big jobs and coordinators are not typically recruiting coordinators, too. I got a feel that if he was hired as DC, Garner would not want the job of RC. I'm not saying he wouldn't want to recruit, obviously he would, but I'm sure at this stage of his career he wants to be thought of as capable coach and not just the recruiting guru tag he's had for a long time.

Third, without making him DC, it's hard to see how we get him unless he just wants to to exact a little vengeance on Richt, and even then he would not be happy at UT for long as he'd have the same frustration he's got now. Sticky.

Couple points:
- Does Garner still have a job at UGA? I know he hasn't been fired, but the DC they brought in coaches the D-line, Garner's current position.
- I want the guy in here for his recruiting prowess, but I'm not necessarily ready to turn the whole defense over to him.
- I doubt Trooper Taylor will be willing to come here unless we make him the OC, and I think that would be a step down from what we have in Chaney.

Who ever said anything about Garner being a DC??? Thompson either for that matter.

A pay-raise and job security should be enough to pry Garner out of Athens.

No way Richt would have been able to get away with hiring Garner as DC.

Both men have big egos.

Sab unless you are thinking Kirby Smart is coming to UT as DC or someone of similar caliber, DD is not dumb and will not blow up his whole staff by bringing in RG and LT unless they are both okay with the role of the other.

If both come? And then you bring in a La Tech guy as their boss? hahahahah

That will not happen.

Either LT will be made DC or we are going to get an NFL level guy or a superstar at DC who LT would be comfortable working for.

Garner is someone I want, but I said from the start I do not think there is room for Garner and LT on the same staff. There is certainly not room for Garner, LT and some DC over them who is not very well known as a stud.

I never saw one word here in Athens about Garner seeking or even being interested in the DC job. Nor, to my knowledge, was he even considered. I'm not even certain that Rodney has any interest in that direction. He is sort of an enigma to most. I do think he is primarily interested in becoming a head coach, thus his title at Georgia.

If there is the least bit of interest on Garner's part about joining this staff, he's a must get.

I think he even understood that there was no way he was going to have a shot at the DC position.

I do agree he wants to be a HC in the next few years.

Lance Thompson has worked for Nick Saban and has worked with Ed Orgeron. I'm sure by now he is very comfortable working with people with big egos.

If you have a problem working with someone with a big ego, you're in the wrong profession.

There was some small discussion in Athens about how Garner and Grantham would interface. Garner is the current DL coach, which was Grantham's position with the Cowboys. Grantham does not know Garner, which might add to the awkwardness. Garner might feel a little insecure about his role with the team going forward. That said, it probably means nothing.

I am not sure whats actually going to happen with job titles and whatever. I would guess if The DC does not come here from laTech...I would think the job is LT's. I would be fine with RG coming aboard, but I do not think he would be offered Co-DC. JMO I would be really against the idea of aking a guy a DC when he has not earned it. Just because a guy is a good recruiter...does not make him DC material. Obviously...Georgia saw this. JMO

He is the assistant head coach at Georgia.

Why would they not be okay with the role of the other? That doesn't even make sense. You think Lance Thompson stayed on board under the understanding that he was getting the DC job?? No. It did not happen, so why would he be upset if they hired Garner as the D-line coach?

Whatever your response was meant to be, it seems to not relate at all whatsoever to what I said.

Every attempt will be made to hire a good, solid defensive coordinator. Until that fails, they would not look to Thompson or Garner.

Exactly. Why would we hire Garner as a DC when he was denied the same position at Georgia? Some of you are not thinking clearly.

Wasn't he denied the DC position twice? That should tell you something if they made Martinez DC over Garner cause Martinez sucks.

the fact that Martinez was even picked doesn't convince me MR knows what to look for in a DC

From many reports Kirby smart wouldn't come to Georgia unless garner wasn't there, apparently they don't get along. I don't see where richt would not get rid of him for smart but would let grantham get rid of him. In granthams intro teleconference he said he hadn't met garner yet but garner would stay as the def line coach. Grantham wants to coach the linebackers so he can be with the line and secondary during drills. But money talks so you never know what's gonna happen.

Martinez was picked because he is a really good DB coach. I think his hire was a combination of his ability to coach db and the athletic department wanting to save money on a coordinator. No one knew he would be as bad as he was at coord. Thank gawd he's gone.

Kirby wouldn't come to Georgia because it wasn't even a lateral move for him. Why would he leave what he has in Alabama to play for a coach on his way out the door in a year or two?

Kirby didn't leave Bama because he was intimidated by Saban and what Saban might do if he left.
