1. Memphis is going to see a whole lot of zone. They're going to have to be more efficient when people don't guard them straight up.
2. Great storyline for tomorrow night's game. Cal and Calhoun can't stand each other, dating back to UCONN's refusal to play UMASS in the early and mid '90s. Makes for a little extra spice.
3. There must be a school where they train the guys operating the out of town scoreboards how to suck at their job. The same first half score for the Georgetown -Michigan was on the board at the Garden for over 2 hours.
4. I may be the only person in the stands for the OU-Gardner-Webb game tomorrow night. That will be some really riveting hoops.
5. Two things I noticed from other games tonight: 1. Good win for Arkansas today. Crushing a decent College of Charleston team on a neutral floor is impressive. 2. Bad loss for Mississippi State. Clemson is exactly the kind of team the Bulldogs need to beat in order to build an NCAA tournament resume.

Thanks for the notes! Did the garden finally fill up some ... or was the tournament not quite the draw they had hoped it might be with UK?

The Tigers have been struggling with the zone defense for several years. Why can't Cal get his guys to figure out how to play against a zone? I think that is the biggest stumbling block on this teams path to the title game. If I was a coach playing the Tigers I would be playing a zone trap the entire game.

The crowd was abysmal. Probably not even half full. I will say there were more Memphis fans in MSG than I expected. People I spoke to expect tomorrow night's game to draw a much better crowd, given that it's a Friday night.

The problem against the zone is that they don't have great shooters to score over the top of it. If they don't start hitting the three better, they'll get a steady diet of 2-3s and matchups.

Was Oklahoma's offense that bad or was their apparent terrible shot selection & sloppy passing a result of the Memphis defense?

And also based on what I saw from the MSU game, they'd better work on breaking the press or we'll force 20+ turnovers

Memphis plays really, really good defense. That always gets overlooked. All one has to do is look at their opponents field goal percentage the las couple of years to see that the Tigers get after it on the stop end.

I agree that busting a zone is having outside shooters and losing Hunt hurt a little. However, being a top five ranked team you should have shooters and be coached to have back door cutters from the weak side to get the other guys out of the zone. Just my thoughts, could be weak.

Their primary half court offense isn't really well suited for attacking the zone. I'm sure Cal is looking at how to tweak it to attack zones more efficiently. That said, if someone doesn't start hitting jumpers, it's difficult to do much damage.

That's not lost on me. Cal has a bunch of athletes that he drills his defensive skills into and they do a damn good job at that.

That's why I mentioned earlier in this thread that his teams have struggled with the zone d for several years. If the Tigers want to go somewhere this year they better get it figured out.

Yeah, but they only went to this attack/skip offense the last couple of years. There isn't a whole lot you can do against a zone if you don't have shooters to distort their rotations.

While I agree with everything you're saying, if you can get a zone to shift to the ball on the strong side of the court a back door cut will disrupt it. Of course having shooters that can hit over the top is equally disrupting. However, Cal has gone on record as saying that he has adopted a new motion offense he learned about from a young junior college coach, can't think of his name right now, because that is the direction basketbal is headed and he is refining it. His offense combined with the personnel he has is working very well and if he works out the kinks playing against any zone defense the Tigers will be a force to be reckoned with.

Heath definitley didn't lead the cupboard empty. Pelphrey was welcomed with athletes capable of contending for an SEC title. I said Arkansas would be playing at a high level come January, but John already has them buying into his system and they're reaping the benefits.

Georgetown was very impressive tonight. Johnathan Wallace and Jessie Sapp were severely underrated going into the season. The Hoyas hit 10/19 attempts from behind the arc. Austin Freeman and Chris Wright provided most of the scoring off the bench. With a frontcourt of Hibbert, Ewing Jr. and Summers, JTIII could very well make consecutive Final Four appearances.

I love watching Georgetown more than any team in basketball. Near perfect ball movement, constant motion from all five players, good shot selection and precision backdoor cuts make this the Princeton Offense on steroids.

Another good sign for Tennessee: The Temple team they handled with ease last Friday played a pretty good Providence team right to the buzzer in Puerto Rico.

Unless Pelphrey has changed his operating procedure from what I've seen the couple of times I watched his South Alabama teams play live, his "system" consists of standing on the sidelines with an awful haircut and letting the players do whatever the hell they please.

Stunna, I agree Georgetown is good. But keep one thing in mind about the game they played last night: Michigan stinks.

As long as they provide enough effort on the defensive end, he usually gives them a little more freedom offensively than most coaches would like.

Thanks Hat. What's your take on the UConn game tonight? Do you think UConn will play a zone D also or if they will go man to man and run with the Tigers?
