I work in the grading/excavating business and just landed a new job where I’ll be making 3D CAD models/surfaces, etc. I’ve ran CAD software with built desktop PCs in the past, but my new boss wants me to find a laptop that will run the software, so I can edit designs in the field when it’s needed.. I was told that there are a lot of gaming laptops out there these days that can handle the load. Anybody have suggestions on models I should take a look at?

I have a Acer Nitro 5. Love it. I upgraded to 32GB RAM and the SSD hard drive.

Are you in East Tennessee? I am needing some land cleared/graded to make way for a cabin in Wears Valley. Do you service that area or do you know someone that does?

Hey bud. Check out the Acer Predator Helios 300. I own one for gaming when I have to travel or for road trips when it’s my girlfriends turn driving. It’s fairly priced, and can run most games in 4K 60fps easily.

Actually I plan on upgrading soon, so if you want mine I’ll be happy to sell it to you.

i7-9750H, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, 1660Ti graphics card.

Thanks man, that one is on the list! Along with the MSI Leopard, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus and a couple more.
It’s good to hear unbiased reviews. I’ll def keep that in mind

If you are interested, we can exchange phone numbers and discuss it. I’ll be in Knoxville for some games this year, assuming you will be to.. that’d be a good meet up spot. Let me know.

@ACvol3 This is my exact model. I’d be willing to sell for significantly cheaper since it’d just gather dust otherwise when my new one comes in.

What’s your new one? Work is paying for it, so I’m not really worried that much about price. They’ll prob want me to buy a new one, but I’ll let my boss know about this

I’m waiting for the 30 series graphics card laptops to show up back in stock, but it will be one of those. I wouldn’t particularly recommend it unless you are just a computer nerd since they’re going for 2500+.. but I program in my free time so it’s a worthwhile purchase for me. But I haven’t narrowed down which specific model I’ll go with since beggars can’t be choosers. I’ll probably pull the trigger as soon as a quality 30 series model comes back in stock.

Also sent you an email with my number attached.

I wouldn’t tell your boss you got one used. It’s in pretty good condition. Show them the price of the model and pocket the difference if you can.. but that’s just my devious mind lol

I’m sure that predator or something along those lines are more than enough for what I need it for. I really don’t know that much about gaming laptops.. just recently started doing research. From everything I’ve read, a good graphics card, a SSD, decent processor, and 16GB RAM are all I really need to worry about with rendering models and such.. if you have any other suggestions, let me know

We do large housing developments in the Knox area and are booked for the next three years or so. You should call Foothills Excavating in Maryville. They do stuff like that up there. They’ve done pretty much all of Blackberry Farms dirt work. The owners name is Todd

Sounds like what I have is more than enough for you. Go new if you like, or buy mine, but if you’re going new and don’t need anything too crazy then you could probably go cheaper than my model new and still get the performance you want. My price is just to throw a ballpark figure out there.. hm, $1200?

You could find a very good new model for $1200 with specs good enough for what you want though, so consider those before my laptop. Don’t want to feel like I’m pushing you to buy mine. Just don’t want to have one lying around not being used, and I trust most of the people here who are in need to sell to, unlike Facebook marketplace and Craigslist, etc.

Keep me posted via email or text. I don’t get on VN as much as I did with my previous job so the replies won’t be as fast. I won’t list it anywhere until you get what you’re looking for

Is it actually a C.A.D. program or is it a modeling program? If its Autodesk AutoCAD I can ask our tech guy.

Some programs will actually run differently so it does matter. For instance Revit, a 3D program, runs off a single core, so for it you want peak specs not a 20 core processor or multiple graphic cards to share the load. If you are just doing wireframe type work, you may not need much at all. Renderings definitely want processors, and a video card. But unless you are doing realistic type work you dont need to break the bank.

No, it’s just civil CAD models through a program called Magnet for topcon GPS dozers, etc. The Autodesk equivalent would be civil 3D. Before, I used a Trimble program called Business Center, and we had built PCs and never had problems. There are 3D site surfaces made from wireframe/triangulations

I had a 3DS max class years ago where we would have to render entire city streets with detailed buildings and what not… it’s not detailed like that at all, but still pretty straining. My last company sunk $5k per PC because the Dells off the shelf were lagging so bad
