The upcoming Music City Bowl will be the first game that Tennessee is not ranked since September 1st, 2022 against Ball State. (We fell out of the rankings during a bye week in 2023.)

This was a 50 game streak.
According to my research it was the third longest Streak in UT History.
Note: Prior to 1950, the AP poll didn’t come out until October, so the first month of the season counted as “unranked” games, negating a streak.

Here is a list of the longest streaks:

If AP existed in 1926, Neyland would've had UT ranked for every poll for 9 straight seasons, mostly in the top 10

All he needed was a sabbatical!
I think if he had an agreed upon 2 or 3 year sabbatical to really dial in the evolving football landscape, you'd see the VOLS with a minimum of 2 extra CHAMPIONSHIPS. Vols fans got greedy/lack of foresight, and ran off the best modern VOL Coach.

Let it be a learned lesson I suppose. And who knows, when the Josh experience is over, we might just have Phil back.
