There's practically no way Tennessee wins in the swamp with an inexperienced QB. Butch would have to be a coaching genius to pull that of.... Oh well I guess enough said.. Lol

Our QB may well be more experienced than Florida's. It's not like they didn't lose anybody after last season ... and we owned their azz last year. :loco:

For the first time since before Mushchamp, I think UF has the decided advantage in the offensive playmaker department. Antonio Callaway is the best player on either team and maybe the best playmaker in the country (if he can stay away from trouble between now and then). Throw in Brandon Powell, Tyree Cleveland, Jordan Scarlett, LaMichael Perine, Goolsby/Lewis at TE, and the wildcard factor of Dre Massey and I can honestly say Florida is loaded. Massey is a guy who had beaten out Brandon Powell and was unstoppable leading into last year, and of course tore his ACL on the kickoff return in the first play of the year. All Florida needs is someone who can reliably get the ball to these playmakers. The brief tenure of Will Grier showed what the UF offense can be with a good QB, and you even saw glimpses with Del Rio and Appleby. Florida is a QB away from being ridiculously good again on offense. They've certainly got a lot to choose from; Zaire/Franks, Del Rio, Trask, incoming Frreshman Jake Allen and Kadarius Toney... surely someone of those 6 can play. We'll see.

Florida will always be loaded with talent, but that wasn't always the case. Many people forget our state's population boom didn't take place until the 1970s.

It's no coincidence our Big 3 schools didn't start competing for and winning national championships until the 1980s.

Not quite right. The fact is correct but out of context. The BIG ORANGE did not play the swamp lizards on CBS until 1992 which is when Verne started at CBS. So while there were games on CBS they did not include a "3rd Saturday in September" game.

Actually, that's not correct. CBS didn't begin airing SEC games until 1996. The 1992, 1993, and 1995 Florida-Tennessee games were all broadcast on ABC, with the 1994 game (as well as the 1990 and 1991 matchups) being aired on ESPN.

And at the time when the CBS started airing SEC games in 1996, Verne Lundquist was currently in the middle of broadcasting from 1995 through the 1997 sports year at TNT, under a contract for which he had left CBS.

Verne wouldn't come back to CBS until that contract ended, making the first Tennessee-Florida game he could have possibly broadcast (presuming he was immediately put onto the SEC coverage) the 1998 game, which recordings show not to be the case: Terry Donahue and Sean McDonough called that game.

Verne's first broadcast of the Tennessee-Florida game wouldn't come until 2000 (the 1999 game was broadcast by Sean McDonough and Todd Blackridge), and it seems that it wasn't until the 2001 game that Verne had taken the lead call / broadcaster duties from then-partner Todd Blackridge).

Fun fact: Keith Jackson called the 1995 and 1993 games, while Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried called the 1994 game and a young Bret Musberger broadcast the 1992 game along with Dick Vermeil.

Florida players can train, run rack, and generally do outdoor athletic things year-round, whereas cold weather areas of the Big Ten and ACC (northern schools), are severely limited 3-4 months of the year. This has been somewhat blunted recently with the Indoor Practice Facilities that are popping up everywhere, but I always thought it was an interesting point. While kids at Michigan and Notre Dame are shoveling snow and ice-fishing, kids in the south are running track and playing basketball.

Fortunately, for UT fans the Nashville/Middle Tennessee area is going through a similar boom which has already led to a rise in top prospects and a better recruiting base for the Vols!

The Bowl Coalition was from 1992 through 1994. It was under the Bowl Alliance setup that we played against Nebraska, but even then that was the last Bowl Alliance championship game, not the first (it was used from 1995-1997, with the BCS taking its place in 1998).

It's a fallacy that Verne's a Florida homer. He's like many announcers. He will SEEM favored to the best team and we must face the facts. For the better part of the last 25-30 years, Florida has been the better team. Plus, it's absolutely never the announcers fault when a team plays bad.

I've always enjoyed the irony of homer fans of any particular team accusing announcers of being homers.

Verne's primary flaw over the last several years was going senile, not favoring one team over another.

1. That's not irony. Since fans are expected to be biased (it's kinda in the job description), but announcers are expected to be neutral. I'm glad you've enjoyed it, though, happy for you there.

2. Agreed. I never found Verne so much playing favorites based on team...just playing favorites based on who is expected to win. But then, pretty much all the play-by-play guys have that tendency.
