Game Thread: LADY VOLS VS. OLE MISS

I think the Lady Vols need to win 2 games in the SEC Tournament to have a chance to get into the NCAA Tournament field.

Yes, 20 wins (If they get 2 in the SEC tournament) might be enough to get off the bubble.

On this win, it was nice to see the LVs dominate a team but Ole Miss is really bad. They are not many genuine cupcakes left in the SEC but Ole Miss. Yet, their two decent players went off for career nights. If Ole Miss had any kind of supporting cast, we might have had a struggle.

Vandy is a far better team than Ole Miss and, indeed the cliche of being better than their record probably applies,. But, Vandy should not be able to get within 10pts of the LVs.

The right form on her shot would help. It appears to me her elbow hangs too far out from her body, not tucked in. Lends itself to inconsistency. Am I right or wrong, CJ?
You're correct. I could have helped me with that if I'd have been given the opportunity to work with her over the summer but was denied. She does square up her body but not in the traditional way. She aligns tow hip and shoulder and follow through and elbow which is the new style of shooting a jump shot. But I would have given her much more consistent release and fine-tuned her mechanics of how did it got to work with her over the summer. So it is what it is and we have one more shooter that learn to do something wrong very well. Maybe they already think letting coach jumper work with some of these kids over the summer under a new Administration. PS... I am using voice text so if it doesn't say what I said it says I hope you can understand what I meant

I've noticed Rennia has a similar shot. Evina seems pretty solid on form.

This, or the next Administration, would be wise to give me a shot at improving these kids mechanics. Like a video tape it I could do it at the facility right there on campus doesn't matter. But give me a shot and I'll show you what I can do UT

Even with well-practiced bad form, shooters can often find the right groove and look great but over time that form will lead to a wildly inconsistent shot.

Wonder why Davis didn’t start in Sunday’s game? I didn’t see her until second half. I may have missed her. She normally starts.

Rennia has the best shot any Lady Vol has had for the last 5 or 6 years. Nice and squared, elbow under the ball, releases at the height of her jump, soft touch. Her handles could use some work, but she has a nice shot.
I'll watch more closely. Thought I saw her elbow stray on occasion but I could be wrong. Yes to height of release, straight up and touch. Handles definitely need work.

just stop dude. if you are that great why are you sitting around on the computer begging for a job haha.

After watching this game again it is even more evident that it isn’t the players. When they are motivated like they were yesterday they’re a tough group to stop collectively. It’s on Holly to get them playing that way every game and at this point in the season it’s too little, too late.

Sure Ole Miss isn’t a good team, but Vandy and Alabama are arguably worse this season. We just made Ole Miss look as bad as they are.

We tapered in the 4th quarter a little but to me it looked like that was because they were ACTUALLY tired from playing ACUTUAL defense for 3 quarters. Biggest plus is that their play early in the game gave them an insurmountable lead. Hoping that they learned a little bit there. You can take one or two plays off (though you shouldn’t) if you have a 30 point lead.

They took and hit open shots like they haven’t done since December. Why now? Who knows. Like I was saying the other day, the 3 ball was a weapon for this group and opens up the lane for the drive and makes it easier for the bigs to get offensive rebounding position. Also prevents opposing teams from packing it in a zone slowing down the pace of the game.

We were able to open up the lead because of the 3 point shot. We don’t hit those early 3s at the end of the first quarter it likely would have been a single digit game at the half which gives inferior competition hope. If you allow them to play with you for 20 minutes they start to believe they can do it for 40 and you lose games to much worse teams. Have to be the more dominant team for the entire game.

We did allow one player to have a big night, but really nobody else. Not sure if that was the game plan, but it honestly wasn’t a bad idea. We keep getting beat by the “others.” The A&M game in particular I felt like we should have focused less on Carter. So what if she drops 40? Let them get theirs, but make darn sure the supplemental players, like Wells, can’t get going.

Biggest thing I saw is that we moved on offense and passed the ball. In the Vandy game the ball got stuck way too much. They got easy looks yesterday because of their ball and player movement. Amazing how the shooting percentage sky rockets when you’re taking good shots. They had 25 assists on 29 made field goals and only 11 turnovers. I don’t remember the last time a Holly coached team did that. Several of which came in the last few minutes just being lax with the ball when they put on their full court pressure.

The freshman looked much more under control, Collins has become more physical and she is shooting a nice percentage from the floor.

Massengill still doesn’t get it, ball gets stuck in her hands on offense way too much, her shot isn’t there yet and she’s a poor defender. I think she has potential, but she shouldn’t be playing more than 5 or so minutes a game with her current play. Too many times she’s in LaLa Land ball watching on defense or watching the play develop on offense instead of being an active part of the play. I think the college game is still too fast for her, needs to watch a lot of film this summer.

If getting into the NCAA tourney depends on beating miss state then the season is over. I'd like to make the tourney and continue that streak...but if Holly gets to keep her job IF they make it...which is a very weak criteria...then almost best to not make it. Not sure what Phil thinks on this. Regardless...she needs to be gone.

Uh huh😂 just don’t be mad for being called out for trying to stir the pot. I can recognize this team has underachieved but that has nothing to do with my reply. Don’t get that twisted!
Your reply was in frustration to a UConn fan saying something about your team that you didn't like coupled with the fact that you were also frustrated that they didn't finish the game strong. Nothing more and nothing less. Otherwise why bring up a completely unrelated AEH, UConn, & Geno topic? You assumed I was stirring the pot and that guided the decision on how you chose to reply. Don't get that twisted.

But I’m going to stop becuz I’m being a “bully” I guess and playing keyboard tough😂😂😂 (only someone who hides behind a keyboard would try to call someone keyboard tough when they were having a convo).
No one called you a bully. In fact I asked if you were trying to fight/argue/get keyboard tough because tone can easily be misconstrued in text. Thus the question mark in my original reply.

But anyways have a blessed day!
We are all adults in here so I simply ask that you own your sh*t. Especially if you think you are "calling someone out." I have had plenty of great WCBB conversations in here. I have made more than enough posts for you to see that I have no reason to be stirring any pots. It's not my style and I post on more than 10 WCBB boards. The block option is still available if you truly feel I am purposely trying to rub you the wrong way. So please do not let anything I say keep you from having a blessed day, which I do hope you meant sincerely. Because to me there is nothing more insulting than a person saying "Have a blessed day!" in a condescending manner. I will take all the blessings I can get.

does anyone remember which player it was that worked all summer w Rick Barnes on her shot? Bless him for doing that. There was a nice article in the KNS about it earlier in the fall....

It was Evina, mostly working on her jump shot with Barnes according to the article. Which really did improve from a year ago, at least for the first half of the season. Lately she's been rushing a bit, shooting the ball on the way up instead of timing her shot like she was. That's why her floater and short jumper haven't been going in, no finesse. Makes for a tough shot to rebound as well, never know where it is coming off the rim.

Hoping it's just nerves and pressing a little hard, just want to see her take a deep breath and relax. She played a great game against Ole Miss.
