Game Thread Lady Vols vs Baylor

I'm interested to see our defensive strategy, particularly assuming Nunn continues to play limited minutes. Do you put Nared or DeShields on Davis? Do you press to try to take advantage of the fact that they don't have a true PG this year (or do you risk running out of gas against a much deeper team)? Can Russell be physical AND stay out of foul trouble against Baylor's bigs?

Probably Nared on Davis to start. It gets tricky when Kim goes to her bench and plays two of Mompremier/Brown/Cox/Cave together. I don't think Nared can keep pace with them on defense or rebounds. She would almost have to put in Nunn.

BU doesn't have a Niya Johnson level PG, but Jones/Wallace have been doing a good job sharing the role. Wallace had 15 assists and Jones had 8 assists in their blowout of DePaul last week.

I agree staying toe to toe and out of foul trouble with the Baylor bigs is the key to the game. if she gets in foul trouble or gets shut down, it could be really ugly.

Lady Vols have been soft. The more physical team usually win top 10 games. Let's see if our ladies put up a fight. Kim is comin to win, we all know that. I would like to see Lady Vols basketball, we are tougher than you.

Diamond, whatchu got? This is the big stage. Mercedes whatchu got? This is why u chose Tennessee.

Lady Vols, first statement game. Lady Vols play tough, by 10.

Pat4Life, I like your mentality, I am being for real. You see one of the issues with this team. They have to be able to come into every game prepared to fight. Their play has to say we are here to kick your butt and send you home with your tails tucked between your legs. That was one of the things I loved about the old Lady Vols, they protected their house. I do not doubt that they may do great in practice, however, you have to take greatness to the floor where it counts. Somehow we have simply lost that Lady Vol toughness.

First my apologies. I was not taking a shot at Russell. She was the number one recruit in her high school class. I want to see what she can do against the better post players in the country: Baylor's bigs, Turner at Notre Dame, Coates and Wilson at South Carolina, and Brionna Jones at Maryland. Sometimes, individual matchups are more fun to watch than the entire game itself. Instead of watching the ball, focus on a specific player.

Second, there are more ways to develop and improve than in game situations. Even though Russell did not play in games for a year, she was still practicing with the team, doing drills, working with the strength and conditioning coach, and doing one-on-ones with Dean Lockwood. She was still being coached on a daily basis and she was developing her skills. She wasn't sitting on the couch in traction for twelve months. Many players that sat out for a year after an injury say that they learned more in that year than in the years they were playing because they became students of the game. They learned to read opposing offenses and defenses better because there was no pressure on them to perform. They came back stronger, smarter, and more mature.

You should apologize for making a false comparison, not for taking shots.

And that has been the hardest part to watch, Teach, the lack of toughness mentally and physically with Holly's past two teams and teams beating us on our home floor. ugh. If this team focus and played with their bodies, frames, be physical, we would be tough to beat.

I went to the Virginia Tech game, they punked us, teams are punkin Diamond too, she used to snap back, but her game haven't been able to back it up, she gotta be tougher on the court. Lady Vols just don't play with an edge, we soft. Soft team dont win championships or go to final fours or win league titles.

Its like the Lady Vols play scared, like don't want to get hurt, they would just stand around and watch rather than mixing it up. I neva seen a Lady Vols team, scared, lacking confidence, like last year and this year's team so far.

If we fight back with our talent we have a shot, but if Baylor hit us solid, and we fold it could be a long game, its all mental for these ladies at this point, a veteran team.

Lady Vols basketball, we are tougher than you.

After watching Baylor recently this game might be closer than I originally expected. Baylor seems to be playing down to their competition quite a bit. The reaction by Kim to this is to just swap out the entire 5 on the floor for another set because she has the players to do this. While I think it can send a message to your team in a particular game if you have had to do this in 4 out of the 8 games you have played so far obviously the message isn't being received.

Also, I think doing that so often is making their games way too close way too far into the game. 3 or 4 games now they have been just starting to pull away in the middle or end of the 3rd quarter versus horrible teams like Emporia State and Abilene Christian.

In games against the better competition, Baylor is playing the trio of Jones, Wallace and Prince big minutes. Davis, Mompremier, and Brown are mostly playingaround 24 minutes, with Cave and Cox getting the balance. Her bench backcourt isn't seeing much time, and I expect that will be the case against Tennessee until they get a big enough lead.

They are a bad matchup because of their ultra deep post rotation and Tennessee's lack of backup for Russell. If Nunn is to have a breakout game, tomorrow would be excellent timing for it.

Baylor is young too, if we keep Alexis Jones in check, we should be in this game and/or don't let psuedo power forward NIna explode.

I thot we matched up well against Baylor. Our ladies have to play like they are the better team, be physical.

I wanna get physical, I wanna get physical... let's get physical, let me hear yo body talk, let me her yo play talk... Go Lady Vols.

I would love for Barnes to teach them how to play defense. The guys today were tenacious . Something I have not seen in years from our LVs.

Right, coaching or whatever, Russell play is not comparable, defensively, against the bigs at Baylor, South Carolina, ND or Texas. I think her offense will suffer against the better bigs. She simply does not play aggressive over four quarters. She is consistently abused by shorter, aggressive, and quicker bigs. In addition, she spends a lot of time watching the game when she should be mixing it up in the paint. She has to find her aggression from within to beat the upper echelon teams the LV's have remaining on their schedule.

Mercedes did a good job defensively on Coates during the SC game last year. Unfortunately for her, Coates did the same and they pretty much cancelled each other out.

When they play ND this year, I hope Mercedes plays with a bit more fight. She wanted no piece of Brianna Turner last year, even though she has a few inches on her, and was thoroughly owned by her.

Baylor and Texas back-to-back with their deep rosters of big girls should give us an idea whether Mercedes is ready to play with the top post players. She's put up good numbers this year, but the competition has been so abysmally weak that it's hard to tell if it means that she's actually better.

Russell has been holdin it down in the paint, the only production we're getting from the post, actually she has been the most consistent Lady Vols thus far, I see a player getting better each game.

I think Russell will be fine in the paint against Baylor.

I jus think her help side defense could be much better, force that extra pass on defense, by going for blocks, she can eat up a lot space with her frame, and by jumping, if she's not going to be physical, at least be active, with screens, and deep post ups (which is physical demanding, gotta be tough) and the Lady Vols players clearing out giving her space, rather the tradition triangle.

I don't think we lose this game cos Baylor bigs dominated Russell. Guard play, guard play. Big games. Defense, Rebound, and good guard play win championships.

Lady Vols by 10.

If Russell is aggressive in the paint and not take rebounds down to her waist, I agree 100%, however, this has not happened consistently this year. If she is physical and quit worrying about fouls, we have a chance. To beat Baylor, Diamond has to play up to her capability and quit making unforced errors. Sometimes I question her desire and she has to have that if we are to win. Reynolds also has to play heads up as our point. Against Baylor, all of our players and coaches must come prepared for a fight. Even if we lose I just want the ladies to play aggressive, with heart and with desire. I want them to protect their turf.

LV's by 10? They lose by 25. Have you watched the LV's play this year?

Good guards always have career days against our weak defensive guards. Baylor has a good guard or two, I believe. Russell is improving but not yet as strong and as physical as she needs to be. We need Russell, Reynolds, DD and Nared to all play well for to be competitive with good teams and that just doesn't happen. Reynolds doesn't score as much as she should, DD and Nared are far too inconsistent. That's a pretty nice core of talent--but they just don't know how to bring it as a group consistently.

I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas and I want the Lady Vols to beat Baylor.

Which of those things do you think might happen?
