Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Week 8

Team seems flat, no spirit in dugout, coaches stand around like statues. Going to be a long season if something doesn't change.

The dugout got loud several times, as did the crowd. But it seemed like every time there was any momentum building, GA would make a great play or we would make a bad one.

We couldn't read the GA pitcher, and she was 0-1 so far this season. Kind of a head scratcher.

This team bears an uncanny resemblance to the Razorback softball teams over the past few years. Their seasons would start off with a slate of non-conference games over which they'd go lights out. When the conference games kicked in, they'd fall apart as often as not being run ruled. BTW, that isn't happening this year.

What do you think changed?

Since our pitching has been struggling lately I was curious to see if any of the pitchers that transferred are having years good enough to have helped us if they stayed. Probably not.

Kelsey Morrison: Now plays for Florida Atlantic. 2-5 record with a 4.06 ERA. Their SOS is 88. Ours is 16.

Bria Bush: Now plays for the University of North Georgia. Division 2 team. Last year she was 8-4 with a 2.34 ERA. This year she is last on the team in innings pitched with 4 through 41 games.

Alex Brake: Now plays for Rogers State. Division 2 team. Bet you can't guess where that is without looking. Her numbers are a little better. 9-2 with a 2.29 ERA. But you have to consider the competition. Their schedule is filled with teams like Nebraska Kearney, Missouri S & T, Washburn and Henderson State. I didn't make any of those up.

The situation with the pitchers is totally strange since both have been through the SEC before. This is not their first rodeo and actually should be better. That would go for almost all the hitter as well. This team suddenly can't compete as the pitching is terrible and no hitting.
The only thing that matters is winning enough to host a regional and super regional and that is starting to fade a little. We need a huge performance in the next ten games to get back up in the rankings and also the SEC standings.

Henderson State is in Arkedelphia, Arkansas. Used to have a decent D-2 football program.

Yep they are terrible and it is obvious that our hitting is way off only four hits today up 3 to 0. We usually run rule these teams.

Exactly, no way we should be letting a 3-31 OVC team give us a fight like that. Should have blown them off the field...I was hoping for some "angry energy" after the GA debacle, but the LVs looked about as listless as previously.

Weeklys, we need some of that coaching stuff!!!

Too many slap hitters for us....

Team has very little power.

Leach is not actually a slap hitter, she is more of a Pete Rose type who reads the defense and does whatever it takes to get on or advance a runner. (watch her feet in the box). Holcomb is a "slapper" but primarily bunts to usually advance Leach which results in her also being safe. CJ is a slapper and never swings away. If we don't have "slappers" we would have had 0 hits and 0 runs last night through 7. Watch the bottom of the 5th inning on ESPN last night.

Allen comes off the bench to get things started and "slaps" one to the OF. Then with her speed on the first pitch to Batts steals second. Batts comes in and slaps one to the pitcher and with her speed causes a bad throw to first which scores Allen. CJ comes in and slaps one to the OF that thanks to her speed turns it into a double. Leach "hits" one to second that scores Batts.
So thanks to the "slappers" who had the only hits and the only runs UT beats a 3-30 something OVC team 3-0.

It is easy to beat a team of "power hitters" you play pitch and catch all night long, look at our last 7 games. We were read like a book and it looked like fielding practice. It is not that we are not hitting or in a slump we are hitting the ball and hoping. I for one would like to thank the slappers for pulling our ass out the fire and giving us a W.

What is their OBP and BA?

Leach is hitting .469 - 1st in the SEC and 9th in the country. Holcomb is hitting .459 - 2nd in the SEC and 11th in the country. McClain was hitting .400 for the majority of the season but has dropped a good bit recently and is now hitting .325.

Leach's OBP is .589 - 1st in the SEC and 4th in the country. Holcomb rarely walks so her OBP is just a little higher than her BA at .479, which is still in the top 100 in the nation. McClain also doesn't walk much and her OBP is .380

Leach can hit with power she doesn't choose to very often being in the leadoff spot. I think she would make a terrific two or three spot hitter but she is so terrific at getting on base see the reason we use her there. A typical type of leadoff hitter is Holcomb not much power tremendous speed and also has a huge obp.

Gregg, Vines, Seggern, Lockman, McSwain, and Morgan are all power hitters. There is a total of 31 homers among the six of them. None are hitting now and Lockman and McSwain are notorious for not hitting in the SEC. Gregg is a terrible slump and Seggern hitting the ball right at people. Vines left five on in two of her at bats versus Georgia on Monday.
The pitching is bad because a lot of pitches are not in the proper location. Both Arnold and Moss are getting pitches up in the strike zone and right in the middle of the plate thus the results. Getting behind to many hitters and then having to come in with a strike which they are making to perfect.
We'll see where we go from here 4 and 2 at home in the SEC and 0 and 3 on the road. We need to finish on the road 5 and 4 and win 5 of 6 at home. That would give us a 14 and 10 SEC record which will probably be good enough for the top five in the conference. Florida and Georgia will almost certainly finish 1 and 2 and the rest will be an assortment of losses that would make 10 SEC losses a high finish.
We will get a regional if we do that and the super will be up in the air depending on rpi and sos. Right now we do have wins over strong teams like Oregon, Georgia, and Utah. We must add to that with Auburn, Bama, and LSU. We need to avoid losses to Miss ST and Kentucky.
