Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team week 13

Tournament bracket.

SEC Softball Bracket

We play the Mizzou/SC winner Thursday noon eastern.

If we win, we play the winner of the A&M/LSU/KY games to get to the championship and presumably Florida.

These are winnable games.

I agree. We got a pretty good draw for this tourney being the 3rd seed. Our path to the SEC championship game is much easier than most others.

If we make it to the SEC championship game & say lose that game do we get a shot at a top 8 seed? I would almost guarantee you if we win that will happen. Remember, we made it to the SEC championship last season against Auburn but we lost.

I didn't think we had a chance at getting a top 8 seed but we did make it at #8. I think we at least make it to the championship game & we get in the top 8 again this season. We need that so bad again to host a regional & Super Regional if we advance. We just play better at home period.

I predict with the lucky bracket pairings we make it to the championship game. I'd say more than likely against UF. The other sleeper team I pick to possibly make the championship is Alabama.

We wouldn't see them until the finals because they're in UF's region of the bracket but I think they are a legit team so they could beat UF & knock them out.

I agree with most of the previous posts above. Good points everyone. I'm just relieved and happy that we got #3 seed. Our path to the SECT championship seems much easier and doable now than compared to 24 hours ago.
Our girls went out and got the job done! Good job Lady Vols, we are proud of you!

Well, LVJeff, I have to disagree with you on one thing: I think our players were focused and ready to play yesterday too. But they were just a little nervous and they didn't play relaxed. They were playing with a lot of pressure on them, and it showed. And also, once again, Madi Osias just pitched one heck of good game. I'm willing to give our opponents a credit when they deserve it, and Ole Miss certainly deserve my praise for one game. Today, Osias seemed a little tired, didn't locate her balls as well as yesterday, and didn't seem to have as much zip on her balls. And our hitters made an adjustment and capitalized on her mistakes.

Had we won against OU, and swept Ole Miss, then I'd say that we'll get a top 8 national seed if we just make a run to the SECT championship game. But, now I think we'll absolutely have to win the SECT in order to host a super regional. We got good pitching, good hitting and good coaching going for us. If our defense doesn't make crucial errors, we have a shot. In one game matchup/scenario, we can upset the mighty Gators should we meet them in the championship game. We had done it before, why not this year? But, let's not look ahead. One game at a time. I'm excited for Thursday game.

It was those early season loses at neutral sites losing to James Madison and then to Arizona St. and Arizona and also I think Fresno State (too lazy to look it up) that hurt our RPI the most. Also if we could have picked up a win at Florida and maybe one more at Missouri we'd be top ten RPI. I think these wins at Ole Miss will help though. They're tough.

Making it to the SEC championship is going to be tough folks. Don't get your hopes up too much. We could very easily get knocked out. If we make it to the championship game again somehow I think we get an 8 national seed again. Last year it was between us and Florida State and we got it.

I haven't see kentucky play this year--a surprise second seed. They seem to have won a /lot/ of close games. The Vols have been playing well. The ou game was ugly, and we were flat in the second game against miss., but on the whole I think the squad should be feeling pretty confident.

Losing to James Madison didn't hurt us, they are a top-10 team and will likely host a super regional. Arizona and Fresno State are both top-25 RPI teams.

Kentucky wins games in the opposite manner from Tennessee. Rely solely on pitching and hope their bats can produce 2-3 runs.

They landed in that two spot largely the beneficiary of a weaker SEC slate. (The opposite of last year where they had a ridiculous schedule and finished next to last and yet ended up in a Super Regional). 9 of their 17 SEC wins came against South Carolina, Arkansas, and Mississippi State (the bottom three league teams). Conversely they have 1 win against the top 5 seeds (at Alabama). Best series wins were the sweep at LSU and taking 2 of 3 Mizzou. If LSU gets past Texas A&M (both teams hot right now) I've gotta believe they'll be chomping at the bit for a bit of payback for the sweep UK laid on them in Baton Rouge.

I guess since Erin is a senior then Nunley is still pitching for them?

Speaking of Erin she has applied for a hardship redshirt because she only pitched 29 innings as a freshman before she was injured. If she gets that along with the pitcher coming in we have a very solid pitching staff for next season. We have to replace some great hitters but have a solid nucleus coming back.

My biggest concern is we gave too many games away with poor defense. Defense is the key when playing top ranked teams. One miscue na you lose 1-0. The men's baseball team is even worse on defense. They ave lost 5-6 SEC games with poor defense.

I know because of the way it is weighted you can actually lose to a higher ranked RPI team and your percentage can go up. But, JM is not in a very strong conference and their RPI ranking is only 4 above ours and it was on a neutral site so I'm thinking the loss probably hurt us a little. That was my thinking.

Yes, I think we're 16-1 in games with zero errors and 16-0 in games with at least one home run. That will be the key in the tournament.

I would bet when we get out of the regional we will be put in the SR with James Madison and that would be fine to me.

Everything will depend on how us and them are seeded but I'd love to play them again. Their coach is outstanding. He has turned that program into a national power in just a few years. I think he came from Radford.

What are the parameters of innings played or games played,ie the maximum ,to be able to receive a medical redshirt ?

To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:
•The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
•The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
•The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
•The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

She was in less than 30 percent of the season but I don't know how she stands in that three contest part. Everything seems to be a go except that three contest part.

Gabriel played in 9 games her freshman year and could've played in as many as 20 as long as they were all in the 1st half of the 64-game season, and she would've qualified for a medical hardship waiver.

Unfortunately, her season-ending injury occurred too late; since she played in the 37th game of the season (19-0 win over Tenn. State on 4/2/13), she does not qualify for a waiver.

JMU's softball stadium seats 500 per their website. That doesn't seem like many. They hosted a regional last season for the first time but have never hosted a super-regional. 500 seats just doesn't seem like many.

They really have a superior resume...they are 43-4 with wins over Tennessee, Auburn, Arizona (twice), Arizona State, Nebraska (twice), and BYU.

Their losses are to Alabama 2-1, Nebraska 7-4, Va Tech 2-1 in the 1st game of a doubleheader, and Elon (conference). That last wouldn't seem to be a good loss.

They brought in temporary stands last year to reach the minimum number required to host regionals, which I believe is 1,000.

I just watched the replay of yesterdays game, the bats were hot and wasn't there no errors ? for a change

I'm not sure why they brought Erin in,instead of letting Matty get a complete game, but it worked :)
