Moss gets the complete-game shutout, but I don't think she pitched all that well. Her off-speed pitches didn't seem to be working, and her location seemed to be off. She also seemed out of rhythm. She would take a lot of time between pitches, and then on the next batter would pitch quickly.

I also thought the team got a little tight as the game wore on. Geer finally loosened them up when she sat on the Change-Up and drove in the first run. That seemed to loosen everybody up in the bats started flowing.

One thing is for sure, Middle Tennessee State was a more quality opponent than was Tennessee Tech. Middle Tennessee state's pitcher was pretty darn good. And their batters hit Moss hard a few times, they just didn't hit the ball where there wasn't any Tennessee players.

Nice wins today. Let's see if they can get a couple more wins tomorrow.

Strange that Geathers is not on the roster--she's been a good player for us and a pretty clutch hitter. Maybe it was a numbers thing---too too many good players/top recruits, and some players who've been regulars are not anymore (fairly or unfairly) and they leave. I don't know if that was the case with Geathers, but it wouldn't surprise me. I think she's a better player than McLain.

Both Lockman and Rowland were top prospects, so I hope they can get untracked at the plate. It sounds very much like the coaches are not going to be too patient with Lockman if she struggles to hit, as she did last year. McSwain is a pretty decent hitter-- her defensive problems at third got into her head and got her benched last year, and she never really got settled. McSwain is a right-hand hitter, and the Vols need right-handed hitting; too many lefty bats left us very vulnerable to a good lefty pitcher--which is how we got eliminated from the NCAA tournament. Holcombe sounds like a player.

I too think she is too athletic to play there but I had also heard that she was more of a liability in left and her arm was weak. WE also have plenty of speed for the Outfield without her. This could be a really good move. Vines is much too good of a player to leave sitting on the bench, but the same can be said for a lot of other players also. Geer, McClain, Holcombe, Lockman, where do they all play? Lockman can only play catcher or first base, and since the team needs a catcher Lockman is a natural choice. Mcswain also did nicely in that role today. The team has a bunch of speedy outfielders, and if it is true that Vines has a weak arm, then the other outfielders would be better choices to start over her. That leaves Vines at first base. She's athletic enough to be able to cover a lot of ground, think Rainey Gaffin. She had one drop today in the first game. Otherwise she handled herself well. I think the move will be okay.

This can be a really good team if the pitching comes through. They were positive signs today that is in fact going to happen. Arnold looked very much in control of her pitches and of her emotions during the first game. Morrison came in and pitched an inning of relief so now she's got some experience under her belt.

In the second game Moss didn't pitch all that well in my opinion, but the thing about it is, she pitched a three-hit shutout. And shut down a very good Middle Tennessee State team every time they tried to get something going. So even though she can pitch a whole lot better, she pitched pretty doggone well today.

I'm excited about the remainder of the season. This has the potential to be a very good Tennessee softball team. Everybody keep your fingers crossed.

I hope so as well Jeff. I did not initially like that thought for 1st base but Vines is such a talent she has to play. I knew Seagean sp was going to take over 3rd and wondered how Scarlett would take it but since it was by committee last year she appears to have accepted the new role and moving on. The Hr she hit seems to show that as well. We need a right hand bat on the line up and if she can catch that is a plus and I was surprised she was in the field but the coaches know more than we do. From what you said about Matty maybe the coaches have tried to slow her down but I remember last year she took the ball and threw it. Did not fool around at all. I had no idea SG was no longer on the team and it was keep quite a far as I can tell for some reason but I would like to know the whole story even though it really is not anyones business. Thank you for covering the LVs for us. I listened to the broad cast and read your play by play as well. BR does a good job. I had also forgot about Holcomb who may be secret weapon we need. Did they say if Morrison was going to pitch tomorrow ?

Agreed!! I hope Scarlett does continue to hit and Lockman even though still young has to get better. I remember last year thinking she will be on track but so after 2 games not yet. She is another good big bat we need to come alive from the right side. McSwain as a catcher, who would have thunk it???

Did Taylor pitch for MTSU today? I'm friends with her and I know she was excited for the game.

The thing about Vines at first, is, this isn't men's baseball where you put your tallest but most un-athletic player at first. In softball, the field and base-paths are so short, that there are more quick bang-bang plays than in baseball. If Vines can shut down the slap hit and bunt to her side using her speed and length - that's gold. Gaffin could do that. We'll see if Vines can.

According to the Lady Vols official Instagram page, Shaliyah was still on the team as of January 23. Something must have happened since then.

Man what a beautiful day at the ballpark today. It's gorgeous, 67 degrees clear blue skies, very mild breeze, supposed to be 76 degrees today. What a great day for a ballgame. Let's play two!
