Game Thread Lady Vols at Penn State

Ok so get rid of the coach and get a new one.

Then lets see how the rest of the season goes with the two guards that you say aren't good?:eek:k:

It'll go the same because a coaching change still won't change their skill set, which is sub par compared to other guards around the country!

Do you remember when Shekinna Stricklen was forced to play point guard? I'm thinking this is the same issue with Jordan. They are both 2 guards.

Anyway you cut it Tennessee is in a world of trouble at point guard.

There was one point in the game where Cedes got free while in the post. She was wide open with her arms stretched out demanding the ball. Jordan dribbling at the top of the key looking just looking at her. I was like screaming pass the ball to her she's wide open! Too late. Turnover. PSU's ball.

Yesssssss I was like WTF!!! There was also a point in the game where she threw it inside to Russell, whom had two defenders around her, yet Jackson was in the corner WIDE OPEN!

I said before the season that shooting generally, and three-point shooting in particular, would be our achilles heel. Not that anyone needs to be brilliant to point that out--outside shooting has been a serious problem for YEARS. Still, 2-19 from the three-point line tonight. Embarrassing. Pathetic. High school players could do better--seriously. In fact, we simply do not have good outside shooters. DeShields was terrible at distance shooting last year--her speciality is the mid-range jumper. Middleton can shoot some, when she's feeling confident. Not tonight! Zero points. Reynolds is not an outside shooter--Warlick should be finding way to get her to the basket or to post up smaller guards--that is Reynolds's strength. Use her strength. If you are having a bad night from the three, stop shooting them. We should never have shot 19--we're not good enough to shoot that many threes.

With Diamond on the team, so many times its still the other team top player controlling the headlines, in the games that matters...

Diamond, wya?

Would Massengale be an improvement over Reynolds. Yea, but only because she could hit some threes as a junior/senior. She was a disappointment at PG herself--a pretty serious disappointment, IMO. As a freshman I thought she'd be outstanding. Nope: She was soft, never really developed as a point guard, was a fairly lazy defender. She could hit some threes, as I said, but that was about all she could do. Our guards NEVER develop. Reynolds is a not a PG and not a shooting guard. She needs a more well-defined role. Middleton should be our PG, IMO--she understandw how to play PG and can pass. Reynolds should focus on using her body and scoring. That's what I'd do--but I'm sure Warlick won't do it.

Ariel as a freshman was better than Jordan has ever been...in all areas of the game. Before Holly moved her off the point to let Jordan take over, she had almost double the assists that Jordan has had in her best seasons. Jordan has a great body for basketball...even the WNBA...but she is not a skilled basketball player. She can't pass. She can't shoot. She can't run the offense. And is anyone surprised that the team looks so out of sync?

Defense, Rebounding and Good guard play win Championships.

We didn't defend and our guards weren't good...= Lost!

Rome wasn't built in a day...

With UT down 13 at halftime, Jaime Nared and Mercedes Russell came out hot in the second half.

The two combined for 29 of Tennessee's 36 points in the half. They also accounted for 12 of UT's 22 rebounds.

Both players ended up recording double-doubles. Russell had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Nared finished with 18 points and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds, five of which were on the offensive end.

Happy Holidays.

You and I may be the only two posters who don't think Russell is this team's weak link. She's not. It would be nice if she had stronger hands, didn't miss some of her layups, and rebounded more aggressively.

But anybody that watched the LV guards in this game go 8 for 38 shooting (2 for 19 from three), have the same amount of turnovers as assists, not get to the FT line but twice, and allow the opponents guards to torch them to the tune of 55 points, cannot possibly think this is Russell's fault.

This team will go as far as the guards take them.

The difference is that Shekinna was a much better basketball player. Poor Shekinna...she was so misused that year because no one could control Meighan Simmons when she was playing PG. I also don't think Jordan qualifies as a SG because she can't and won't shoot the ball.

You know some coaches actually develop his or her players with a deficient skill set into becoming better, especially by the time they're upperclassmen....

Here we go again!! Is Holly ever going to get it? I see the same plays and mistakes that we made last year. They better get it pulled together pretty fast or we go down exactly the same road as we did last year.

What should have been an easy win turns into a circus yet again!!!

Hope the new recruits will stick with us!

Get it straight Holly before it is too late!!!
Carole King song says it best: :whistling:
It's too late, baby!"

Middleton is a much more natural PG than Reynolds. That is OBVIOUS. She should run the team and Reynolds should play the 2 and try to get to the basket and score or dish--she's got a great body for taking the rock to the hole. Do it. When is the last time we had a pair of guards who could play? It's been ages.

I can't understand for the life of me why Middleton continues to get the minutes she does...

Maybe because Reynolds with almost three times as many minutes had only 2 more points and 1 more assist than Middleton.

None of the perimeter players had anything remotely resembling a decent game.

I still wonder what kind of dirt Reynolds has on Holly such that Holly keeps starting her at point.

Reynolds has never done that in her career at Tennessee thus far, and I suspect she's not going to all of a sudden learn how to do so.

I usually get all upset when the Lady Vols lost. My expectations went down when Cooper was ruled out for the season. I expect the Sweet 16 is realistic. Reynolds is a liability as a point guard and we don't have consistent guard play. Our defense has taken a back seat. My realistic expectation is the Sweet 16.

Reynolds has lived off the legend of when she saved Tennessee's bacon in the SEC tournament vs. Kentucky her freshman year. That has been her career highlight, and she has never replicated it.

It's like whenever Holly looks at her, she must be remembering how Jordan completely changed the momentum in that game, and keeps hoping maybe after 80-some mediocre games since then that she might repeat that performance.

Yes they have to take a huge amount of blame for the way this team plays. Penn State brought a lot of energy tonight and we played like we didn't care.

I agree with you. Some fans keep trying to throw players under the bus. Coaches have to demand the best or players are not going to Give it. This is Holly's team and she has to shoulder the responsibility to get it done, period.

That's part of what's hurting us she wants to facilitate and we need her to score

I was joking! The smiley face was a giveaway. :)

She acts like CHW is gods gift to wcbball. And we both know that's

And plz don't bring politics into it. Wasn't this loss bad enough?

You are right about politics but I was trying to make a point as well.

Thanks

We will not make any sweet 16 this year.
