Game Thread Lady Vols at Penn State

1st game that I have seen this year.I agree with the majority on here that this team looks just like the team last year against a zone defense which is clueless .I thought I read somewhere that Holly had placed increased emphasis on a zone offense in the preseason. If this game is any representation of that coaching she just needs to step aside and let the team coach itself ...it could not be any worse. If opposition plays zone against this team ,they may very well lose more than they did last year. One word can describe this performance......pathetic.

I am afraid that that word .......will be used many times this year.

I get a little perplexed when they're down double digits and smiling or looking relaxed. I guess that's how athletes are now but I don't remember Pat or her teams doing when they were down. I remember a lot of yelling and a lot of glaring and hustle. #bringthedyNASTYback

Pat would have had these ladies running suicides the minute they got off the bus... after she'd been in their faces the whole way home. We miss Pat.

Holly and all coaches. Look at this '98 Championship tape. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvw0iU-fqUs) This is PHS won - notice the speed of the game, which by the way reminds me a lot of UConn now. Notice the discipline of the players, who don't just jack up a shot but look for the best shot. Conversely, they don't just sit around and hold the ball. What the hell was going on at about 3 minutes in this game and the Lady Vols were in front of their bench just dribbling and passing, all while being 10 pts down. And then to throw in Dunbar to jack up 3s in the last few minutes. 3 minutes in the game and you're 10 pts down, the ball is in Diamond Deshields hands everytime. She may be off her game some nights, but she's the best on your team - period!!!! I'd take my chances on her. In case you didn't notice, she's preseason all american, ESPN top 20, WNBA draft #1 prospect. Everybody knows the talent but her current coach - really? It may be that everyone knows her game will take off after college, but is essentially suffocating under a poor coaching staff. Who was the last player that came out of the lady vols program, who's game evolved over her four years at TN? I can't name a single player since Holly's been coaching, that's gotten better year to year. And Holly's been coaching this team longer than people may realize. Before PHS early on-set dementia was made public, Holly was coaching this team and has done nothing with it.

Yep!

They should not pick and chose when to play hard, they should play hard from start to finish. like most said they looked like last years's regular season team and that's not good at all it's terrifying.

HW and staff need to line up and start the suicides first and these lackluster performers behind them. I see the head scratching already!

Diamond, wassup tho? U the leader of this team and play like that? wassup ma? How can u allow that kind of performance?

Post game...typical Holly Warlick..."We're just not very good"..."We had a great game plan"..."I DON'T HAVE ANY IDEA"..."I don't know where we "left it"...maybe on the bus, she suggested...and biggest lie I've heard since the Trump-Clinton debates ended..."It won't happen again"...:birgits_giggle:

Thank you!!!! Please give us guards that know what the hell to do with the ball!!! I just can't believe Holly's game plan was to stand and look with the ball....Alexa just won't cut it against quicker and more athletic Guards....Nared rebounds and hustles but is terribly inconsistent offensively......DD should stay, no questions asked!

I did not hear her but most of us could have predicted 99% of what she was going to say. Those orange colored glasses some on here wear should be getting a little cloudy.

Call a spade a spade!!

My suggestion for Holly...you have the # 1 rated recruiting class coming in next year...don't try to coach them...just let them play and get the hell out of the way...they will make you look like a good coach if you let them coach themselves! If you tinker with their game, you'll just screw it up!

We're all excited about the #1 recruiting class....HELLO!!! one could argue the #1 recruiting class is on the floor now:

'13 Mercedes Russell - #1, 5 star recruit
'13 Diamond Deshields - #3, 5 star recruit
'13 Jordan Reynolds - #42, 4 star recruit
'14 Jamie Nared - #6, 5 star recruit
'14 Alexa Middleton - #28, 5 star recruit
'14 Kourtney Dunbar - #78, 4 star recruit
'15 Jamesha Jackson - #49, 5 star recruit
'15 Te'a Cooper - #8, 5 star recruit, albeit sidelined

you get the picture. we're playing with as many 5 star recruits as anyone right now, but someone has to know how to get the best out of these young women and help them to take their game to the next level.

sorry, i'm not feeling really excited about having the #1 recruiting class.

Exactly Holly has to stop trying to force it to be Russell's team and allow it to be Diamond's team in a sense, say what you want about Diamond but she gives it her all and isn't afraid of anybody and will take the shot if need be. Relying so much on Russell and what she is expected to do (dominate every game) but seems to continue to fall short against better teams is hurting us.

You can't force anybody to want it, it's either they do our they don't and if she (Russell) is going to be who Holly wants the ball to go through and be our leader she has to get stronger and more agressive and stop being passive. Nobody fears her (imo). Griner (although 3 inches taller) had players scared to come into the paint, thats the same level of play we need from Russell if it is going to run through her!

This is the first loss (and hopefully an eye opener), the sky isn't fallen but we have to decide who we truly wants to lead this team! Diamond imo can still be a NPOY candidate if Holly truly take the handcuffs off of her! That's just my assessment.
