Game thread: #15/13 Lady Vols at Florida. Sunday, Feb. 23, 1pm ET, SECN

Totally cause we got a team that is just not consistent and you never know what they are going to do. Even in that half after building it up to 11 we throw the ball away three straight times and take two terrible shots.
I get it. At times we’re red hot, other times we’re a hot mess.

Sometimes I think they tend to revert to their old timey style of play. I imagine that can happen when that's what you've done your whole life. I also notice when our girls get behind, they kick it up a notch--reminds me of Secretariat hanging out in the back and then deciding I better start going. As we know, we've only lost by a few points when we do lose.

We don't have the consistent 3 pt shooting game to play the chuck a 3 style. CKC ruled that out after the Vandy loss. She wants motion and passing and hunting good shots. Too often that translates to 1 on 1 though.
It shouldn’t. Not if there is enough motion. The problem is failure to throw the ball to an open team mate…. Looking at you Tay Tay…

Yes, offensive decision making is not her strong suit. Hard to toe the fine line btw carrying your team and doing too much and Coops still such a newbie. Hopefully an off season of intense film study will help.

Only when I know I've got their exact words are things in quotation marks. All others are best I remember, taking notes.
Lots of time and brain cells have passed since I was writing verbatims.

From Brian Rice's postgame radio interview with Zee Spearman:
When asked about her patience in the lane on her final shot, to get the defender up, make the shot, and draw the foul:
I feel like I start the game rushing things, so I had to get more patient as the game goes on.

Asked about her consistent contributions in each quarter, while the rest of the team was up and down:
I knew I needed to keep bringing the energy. Can't play the refs, so you just gotta keep playing hard.

Asked about the difference after halftime: We just fixed our defense... got more aggressive.

Asked about the next game: We need to improve our rebounding, and stay aggressive on D and offense.

From CKC's postgame radio interview with Brian Rice:
"What was halftime like?"
CKC: "[wry laugh] Much needed."

We just went back over the original game plan because in the first half we didn't do one thing that was in the game plan. But to their credit, they responded. I think earlier in the season, they would have continued to just do what they did in the first half.

If we play like this in Lexington, we lose. If we play like this in the SEC Tournament, we lose.

The Arkansas game [Jan.12] was the last time we played a good game on the road.

Huge win. LVs, bishes! 🍊

Just for today, this was the biggest game of the season. Good teams find a way to win when they are not at their best. LVs did that.

You have to love the fight in these young women!

Gotta bring it against Kensucky.

So glad we won! Hearing repeatedly throughout the game how we needed to win for the home court in the NCAAs made it that much more intense and annoying. It was a complete no-show in the first half. Every team has games or parts of games where shooting is off, but everything we did in the first half was the opposite of Kim ball: NO one was trying to get offensive rebounds despite so many misses, 5 players getting in foul trouble, we were creating few turnovers and not passing around for the open shot. The 3rd quarter was 100% Kim Ball: Turnovers, steals, good passing, crashing the boards, hitting threes, and staying out of foul trouble. Well into the 3rd quarter, I noted that we had just one foul against it despite our defensive intensity. It is all about focus and to play Kim ball you need extraordinary focus to do it all. It is a joy to see when it happens. When is that last time we had 37 points in a quarter in a SEC road game. In any case, we can't always play like that but we better never play so off key for a whole half like we did in the first.
