Just read the game thread again to find out what fans expect. This fan base is mostly delusional in the off-season. I can’t think of many season openers that exceeded our expectations……maybe opener vs Cal several years ago? Dooley’s whooping of NC State?
I would say disappointed rather than dejected. He still emphasized that they could perform better. Sounded as if game didn't match practice... hope he learned from the last coach to cut that cord quick if it doesn't change.IMO - watching the post-game presser, Heupel seemed a little dejected with both Milton and the WR unit, which gives me a little hope.
If Heupel takes the podium today and says in a snarky tone,”we ain’t got no time to develop no starting QB, aiight”...I’m out.Clearly, no adjustments needed to be made. Milton was absolutely lost out there against Bowling Green and we said 'nah, we don't need to work on this or try something else. Not developing our QB now won't come back to hurt us later down the stretch'.
I'm not grading position by position, but a few points:
1. I see the reason coaches look at Milton and salivate at his potential, but the kid is super indecisive on most decisions, both running and passing. In the run game it means he misses openings and gains less yardage than he should. In the pass game the indecisiveness manifests as late reads and missing wide open guys. At least 3 times there were WIDE open guys for big yards or TDs.
I don't think this JG 2.0 garbage is fair though. JG was doing that crap after 4 years in college, Milton still has room and time, but this has got to be addressed or we will be crushed by even mid tier opponents.
2. The defense could be serviceable but we desperately need some outside pressure on the QB.
3. Special Teams were fairly pedestrian overall.
4. The running backs were good, not great, despite the numbers. The inefficiency in the pass game will hurt the run production against stronger opponents.
5. We are going to have to improve considerably to beat Pitt
Didn't even take that long. Their two drives occurred at the end of the 1st qtr and beginning of the 2nd qtr. Heupel acknowledged that they did some unexpected things. I'm fairly impressed even with due consideration to the competition that they were able to take a fairly inexperienced unit that has limited playing time together and make adjustments that shut those things down for the rest of the game.I liked that we were finally able to make some halftime adjustments.
Pruitt's results in the 3rd quarter were absolutely appalling.
This is Milton’s 4th year of college, and he arguably had better coaching and continuity as well as talent surrounding him than JG. Argument could be made he’s worse. Just playing devil’s advocate though and pointing out the fact that he’s had plenty of time to not do the things he did last night. New offense or not.I'm not grading position by position, but a few points:

Shocking that you gave the WRs and RBs the same grade. We didn't watch the same game, I guess.Well it was a win so as a Vol fan I am pleased. I am scared of what is to come though.
Offensive Line -- A Milton could hold it for 5 seconds on most plays. Really impressive but it was BG
Defensive Line --- B+ Blew up alot of plays in the backfield. Got our hands up when could not penetrate (I have missed that from our recent teams)
WR ---- B would of been an A+ if it weren't for two bad drops. Has potential to be a good core.
RBs --- B
For the game a B but for rest of season most likely a D. Holes were huge and RB had all kinds of room in open field. Unfortunately, this are either small or slow and I doubt we have much success running the ball against most teams this year even with a good OL.
Secondary ---- B- This was BG and they had guys wide open ALOT. Talking was good and they bended but didn't break. Better teams will expose us unfortunately
QB------ D
Milton is who I thought unfortunately. Stares at the primary receiver and either throws it there or tucks and run. I saw 3 plays all night when he scanned the field. I want him to be good I just do not think he has it in him. We will be a league leader in turnovers with him at the helm. Also, every team will just stack the box as its obvious he has poor accuracy down the field. Yes it is game 1 of new coach/system ect but this was him at Michigan as well. We win 4 games this year if Milton is the best we got.
Coaching--- A I am just happy to see something other than run up the middle, run to the outside, pass. run up the middle, run up the middle, pass on every single possession like we have seen since Kiffin left. This year will be rough for the coaches as I think we land on 4 wins. But I was excited to see fast pace up tempo offense with some shots down the field. Also, liked he switched it up to all run since it was working and easy. Will be interested in seeing if we make a switch at QB or coach can "coach him up". Also I remember Hooker being not terrible at VT. Wish we got to see more of him.
What are your grades/thoughts??
But leaning on the running game was the adjustment. He wants to make sure we secured the win first and foremost but he let Milton continue to air it out deep into the game to try and get him confidence and experience. So I don’t agree at all that we didn’t adjust. In fact, we came out of the locker room ready to play and we haven’t seen that in years.

I give Cs and Ds outside of both lines and run game… they get Bs only because it’s BG if they play like that against good competition, they get AsWell it was a win so as a Vol fan I am pleased. I am scared of what is to come though.
