Well it was a win so as a Vol fan I am pleased. I am scared of what is to come though.

Offensive Line -- A Milton could hold it for 5 seconds on most plays. Really impressive but it was BG
Defensive Line --- B+ Blew up alot of plays in the backfield. Got our hands up when could not penetrate (I have missed that from our recent teams)

WR ---- B would of been an A+ if it weren't for two bad drops. Has potential to be a good core.

RBs --- B
For the game a B but for rest of season most likely a D. Holes were huge and RB had all kinds of room in open field. Unfortunately, this are either small or slow and I doubt we have much success running the ball against most teams this year even with a good OL.

Secondary ---- B- This was BG and they had guys wide open ALOT. Talking was good and they bended but didn't break. Better teams will expose us unfortunately

QB------ D
Milton is who I thought unfortunately. Stares at the primary receiver and either throws it there or tucks and run. I saw 3 plays all night when he scanned the field. I want him to be good I just do not think he has it in him. We will be a league leader in turnovers with him at the helm. Also, every team will just stack the box as its obvious he has poor accuracy down the field. Yes it is game 1 of new coach/system ect but this was him at Michigan as well. We win 4 games this year if Milton is the best we got.

Coaching--- A I am just happy to see something other than run up the middle, run to the outside, pass. run up the middle, run up the middle, pass on every single possession like we have seen since Kiffin left. This year will be rough for the coaches as I think we land on 4 wins. But I was excited to see fast pace up tempo offense with some shots down the field. Also, liked he switched it up to all run since it was working and easy. Will be interested in seeing if we make a switch at QB or coach can "coach him up". Also I remember Hooker being not terrible at VT. Wish we got to see more of him.

What are your grades/thoughts??

I'm not grading position by position, but a few points:

1. I see the reason coaches look at Milton and salivate at his potential, but the kid is super indecisive on most decisions, both running and passing. In the run game it means he misses openings and gains less yardage than he should. In the pass game the indecisiveness manifests as late reads and missing wide open guys. At least 3 times there were WIDE open guys for big yards or TDs.

I don't think this JG 2.0 garbage is fair though. JG was doing that crap after 4 years in college, Milton still has room and time, but this has got to be addressed or we will be crushed by even mid tier opponents.

2. The defense could be serviceable but we desperately need some outside pressure on the QB.

3. Special Teams were fairly pedestrian overall.

4. The running backs were good, not great, despite the numbers. The inefficiency in the pass game will hurt the run production against stronger opponents.

5. We are going to have to improve considerably to beat Pitt

Overall C-

Michigan fans warned us & they are right.

Think our problem is no great talent anywhere. Coaching is better though. We are still struggling & behind everyone in strength & conditioning program.... Very obvious. We should be able to recruit well offering lots of PT

Be lucky to win 3

We win 3 without luck, Tennessee Tech and South Alabama are wins. Vandy will be toss up but should win. Anything else is gravy

Man, I don't know how it's possible to give coaching an A. I know that whenever you hire a new HC, you look for any modicum of improvement in the first game, and if there is any, it's an encouraging sign that things are going in the right direction. But, if you really look at how the coaching staff made adjustments tonight, I wasn't very pleased with them. Heupel said all the right things and has the right attitude, but he did nothing to earn an 'A' grade in terms of actual game management. Milton struggled with throwing the ball deep, and Heupel did nothing to try and give him different opportunities and switch up the passing game plan. Instead, he just completely leaned on the run game in the second half and neglected developing his QB because it would've been too embarrassing if the score was lower than how it turned out.

I don't know, call me crazy. I just think if Milton is the biggest problem with this offense, I'm going to spend this game giving him reps and getting more comfortable distributing the ball. Heupel just sort of gave up on letting Milton throw it and develop that confidence.

I got bad news: Milton is in year 4 of being a college player

We played Bowling Green. We didn’t need to make any adjustments. In a real game he’s not gonna have Milton stand for 7 seconds and launch Hail Marys

We went 3-7 last year, lost 11 starters I believe, and replaced the entire staff with the AD. So what the hell do fans expect. If this coach is the guy it's going to take time.

For the QB guru head coach, to have a well-performing QB against one of the worst teams in the the country.

Especially so since the starting QB is the coach's hand-picked transfer.

Remind me, what great QB's has Heupel forged in his career? He's still got a lot to prove on that front.

Clearly, no adjustments needed to be made. Milton was absolutely lost out there against Bowling Green and we said 'nah, we don't need to work on this or try something else. Not developing our QB now won't come back to hurt us later down the stretch'.

Game was over halfway through the third after we came out the second half and scored two straight TD’s, so I’m not sure why you’re saying no adjustments were made when what they were doing was working against an inferior opponent. You can criticize Milton for having a bad game. He had open throws all night. It wasn’t the offensive plays that was the problem.

Sam Bradford
Landry Jones
Baker Mayfield
Trevor Knight
Drew Lock
Mackenzie Milton
Dylan Gabriel

All guys he’s coached in his career at some point that at minimum have had good college career. Might want to sit this one out champ.

I can agree about Bradford. The rest are iffy.

Landry Jones and Trevor Knight were fine in college, failed at the NFL. Mackenzie Milton, and Dylan Gabriel are good players, but not among the best in the country currently. Baker Mayfield was a freshman during Heupel's last year at Oklahoma when he was just co-offensive coordinator. Hard to say he was responsible for Baker's development. Drew Lock was also just fine in college and is having a much better NFL career than his college play, and Heupel was only there for one year of Lock's collegiate career.

Sure, he's had a hand in a few guys. I don't think he's been 'responsible' for most of the QB's you listed.

Landry Jones threw for 16,646 yards and 123 TD’s in four years at Oklahoma and Drew Lock just lost his starting job so he’s not doing better in the NFL please stop lol

I expect a professional coaching staff. Unlike the previous staff.. Not one that falls in love with perceived atheletsim and a big arm. It's apparent on day 1 your QB1 can't throw a deep ball.....never will without luck. You have 2 RB at 116 yards rushing, so you don't need QB1 to carry you there. You can't have your QB holding onto the ball for minutes on end being indecisive....and running like he's 5'11" 150lb. At some point this staff will have a come to Jesus moment.....I'm interested to see what they do.

Starting at the top, Coaching had some hiccups tonight. Questionable clock management call/no calls. Hesitancy to further exploit the success of the run game. Defense looked really good at times. Defenders were in the places they were supposed to be for the most part. Great flashes on D. The passing game was an obvious disappointment. Milton liked to point at himself after a good play. To his chagrin he rarely got to do it. O-Line and backs played well. We did not shoot our feet off with penalties. There is MUCH work to be done to compete in the SEC.

Looking at this after listening to what Heupel has told us over the past months, I'm not surprised in the outcome. I made particular notice of how what CJH spoke about time of possession and the way it played out as he had described. The mistakes on offense are going to be magnified by this offensive scheme, but at the same time CJH has had significant success with it in the SEC. Its just my opinion, but I honestly think there is only room to go up from tonight's performance. I was pleased to see the effort and attitude of the team. If the kinks get worked out, this could be a lot of fun to watch.
