Do any of our gator friends have any updates on conditions on the ground near Gainesville? Looks like the storm as passed/passing through this morning. Has been lowered to tropical storm, 45 mph gusts and about a 25% chance of rain the rest of the day according to weather.com.

I read a news report that said over 50% of Florida is out of power right now. And heavier on the western half of the peninsula.

So decent chance none of our VolNation members who live in the area can get to the internet right now. Bigger fish to fry as they get out to see what needs to be fixed and cleaned up.

Think they'll start showing back up here again over the next couple of days.

Apart from any damage to the area, the biggest issues for the game will be Power and Water at the stadium??

If power is out and cannot be restored in time, then no game. JMO

Everything will be back to normal by Sat. Irma sped past Gainesville and dropped a small amount of rain. No reported damage to stadium, campus or surrounding area.
I would make plans for the game to be played as planned.

I believe the biggest post hurricane issue will be travel. I read 7 million evacuated and most will want to return home. Plus they used all of the gasoline in the state so there is that to deal with as well.

For a lot of people down there, it won't be normal for a while. With that being said, the game will be played this week and the state obviously did not get the worst case scenario.

The bad stuff is past Gainesville, and pretty much past all of Florida. I think Jax actually got hit harder than Gainesville because they caught those "dirty" Northeast bands.

The main issue now is power outages, but everyone prepared for that.

Ya'll are also forgetting that any displaced people will be housed in hotels, etc. Areas that have flooding, damage and no power will move to where there is power and safe housing.

The added influx of travelers puts a huge stress on the area even if they were not directly impacted.

One week after a major storm may not be enough time to resolve all the issues. It's not as simple as flipping a switch and everything goes back to normal.

I live in the Houston area. There are no hotels available. There are many businesses that are not functioning yet.

I have a house full of family from Jax (I live in Atlanta) who are headed back this evening. Evacuees want to get home asap. They won't be lingering around waiting. The interstates heading southbound will be messed up for a few days, but by Thursday/Friday that will be pretty much back to normal.

Star raider nailed the biggest problem. People returning to FL will be the biggest issue. Usually takes me 11 hrs to get back to TN. Last TTH it took me 17 hrs!!!

Didn't they have football games in Houston still?

I would not be surprised to see all sporting events in Florida canceled for another week.

Hell of a lot more things to be concerned about

Without good damage assessment in yet from the Keys, Naples, the Fort Myers area, and the greater Tampa Bay area, can't know for sure...

...but it sure looks like what could've been a catastrophic Cat 5 impact was thankfully dialed back in the final hours.

Think the folks in southeast Texas got far worse abuse from Harvey than Florida has gotten from Irma.

I'll be surprised if it's NOT rescheduled.

UT and UF do not share a common open date, nor do they share an OOC date. The game will be played this weekend or both will be ineligible for Atlanta. The conference will not move the championship game either.

Texas A&M was in California.
University of Houston's game in Austin was cancelled.
Rice University played in Sydney, Australia on 8/26.
Lamar University played away in Denton, Texas.
The Texans moved to Dallas and used Jerry World.
The Astro's games were postponed.

There are several high schools that are sharing class space with other schools. The schools won't be fixed for 1 to 1-1/2 years estimated.

The high school football schedules are all messed up.

And thankfully so. That thing was scary. The islands were not so fortunate. I have many friends and relatives that live in Florida. Most have reported that they have no major issues, except no power. At this point no power is just an inconvenience. Everyone is safe, homes are fine, they don't have AC, Wifi or TV.

Oh ok. Thanks for doing the research I was too lazy to do. :)

Yeah, man, agreed.

Lack of AC is the big health concern from here on. There's a reason Florida was a largely unpopulated backwater until the 1950s: arrival of affordable AC and corresponding steady growth in population until Florida is today the 3rd most populous state in the nation (in 1950 it was #20, behind Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, and Kentucky, among others). AC makes the environment not only livable, but enjoyable.

Lots of old folks who are accustomed to its protection but without it now. Here's hoping they get the power back on quickly in most places.
