This is going to seem like a trivial thread to many, but I was wondering who feels the same way as I do on this issue.

One dimension of football that is important to me is aesthetics, and the new brands of helmets that are continually being released are ugly as hell. They are safer than the classic designs, but is it impossible to keep the old styles and make them safer? Any experts on the issue want to chime in?

As weird as it sounds, I agree. I dont like the looks of the new helmets. The facemask is screwed up too. Now they are safer which is what really matters, but I dont like the looks of them either.

they are ugly as sin. the facemasks are even worse. but if it keeps Eric Berrys head from denting when he blows up on some pour souls than ill just have to focus on their jerseys rather than the ugly a$$ helmets theyre wearing.

I don't care if facemasks save broken noses, they look aweful, I wish they would just go back to the leather helmets.

The new helmets are made anatomically correct. Meaning less pressure that is evenly dispursed at impact. Most players never really have their helmets correctly fitted for them. Meaning more concussions and injuries. The new helmets actually fit the head better and protect against the shock of a hard hit against the spinal cord.

Seems like you know a lot about the issue. Is it impossible for the classic looking helmets to be re-tooled to acomplish the above advantages, or is the increase in safety a function of the changes that have made them ugly?

They have added the ridge to the helmets to help dispurse the impast energy. Honestly I'm not sure that there is a way to bring back the old styles unless you take away the saftey issue. Guys are getting a lot bigger and stronger and if you take away all the new advances you are going to have a lot more serious injuries. Most of the new helmets, at least from adams, have the same material you'll find in bulletproof glass.

the newer helmets with the ridge and the holes are called revolutions. at first i didnt like them because they looked so strange but i have gotten used to them now.

as the other people have mentioned, they are more balanced and disperse shock more evenly, and they are lighter.

since it is a safety issue, i seriously doubt they are going away

You know somebody in the 1950's was saying: "facemasks? What happened to leather helmets? I don't like these fancy new ones. In my day...."

They are constantly coming out with new stuff the revolution is old school the latest one I've seen is the DNA helmets. They have an odds shape but its all for a reason. The difference between the two are amazing. I had 3 concussions with the old helmet and they are not concussion proof because I got one last year with a revolution but it could have been much more serious had I not had a revolution. They are also a ton more comfortable to wear then the old ones. After wearing a revolution and my history with head injuries I dont think I'd feel safe in a old helmet they are a big deal

Eric Berry has an old helmet. Does he deliver or recieve concussions? My money is on delivery.

I have also heard that they have come out with new shoulder pads that better fit each player that allows for better protection and also allows better range off motion when you raise your arms.

Take care of yourself, mattvols. I don't know how long you plan on playing football, but remember that concussive injuries can have a cumulative effect. Protect that 'noggin. Don't want to develop memory problems or a speech impediment.

The newest helmet you'll see is the Riddel Revolution Speed:
Riddell: Product Detail

Schutt's newest model is called the Air XP that has the traditional shell, but updgraded interior protection:
Schutt Sports: Helmets - AiR XP

Schutt also makes the ION 4D which is worn by all Penn State Players:

One style that you'll probably see in CFB in the future is the Xenith X1, which was designed by a former Harvard football player:
Xenith

I like the Riddel a lot and that ION 4D looks MEAN

The top is my favorite. The facemask is wicked looking.

They look just fine to me...and saftey is much more important than the looks of the helmet anyway.
