If there is one thing I really like it's that our defense is playing with more energy. I see a lot more "BOUNCE" each week. I wanna see that get better.....but what has been distressing is the lack of wrapping up on tackles. Also guys going high for that HS like hit highlight, vs sound mid body low wrap up, and good tackling technique. Also just poor grip, swatting at guys verses grabbing and clinging.

I dunno what we need here, and I know new coaches just got here, but wonder if they couldn't use an additional assistant coach on defense to work on technique. Some of this should have been done years ago. there's been a lot of bad habits developed due I think to constant change in coaches. But by the time your a Junior or Senior your tackling should look more professional. This can be said just about across the board on the defense, and even more so on special teams. Though I will say Special teams looked better on coverage this week then they have earlier games.

I dunno who we need, but I would really like to see an additional coach that worked on NOTHING but teaching these guys better fundamentals on tackling and angles. We have much better raw talent then our games show, due to poor fundamentals and bad habits.

The best tackles are from the waist down. Wrap those arms around him and don't let go until the runner is on his arse and the whistle blows...Just in case anyone didn't know that.

AJ got lucky with several of his high tackles. But at the same time, you have to recognize that with the fast paced game, sometimes that's all you got time for.

As for yesterday, it was more bad angles that hurt us as opposed to bad tackling.

A.J. missed a sack because of a high hit !!!

Yup.....but to be fair it's not just him.... But you notice it more with Aj, because he's great at reading plays and getting to the ball, if he tackled better his numbers could be legendary.

sometimes they aren't bad angles...
its the lack of speed that turn it into a bad angle...I don't think some of our guys realize how slow they really are sometimes...

Ummmm......ok

Well, we've been missing many defensive fundAmentals since Chief left - especially last year. (No, I'm no CPF fan.)

One day, before I die, UT will put together a good offense and good defense. One day, I just know it. Last year - good offense/no defense. This year - little offense/decent defense.

Also it looks like they have been emphasizing so much on the "lawn mower" and trying to strip the ball that this is allowing too many extra yards.

No argument there....sometimes his defenses were predictable, but even so they were just fundamentally sound. So even when they knew it was third and Chavis....there was no hope of escape.

I miss the Chief. :(

Part of a perfect form tackle is having the quickness and speed to put yourself in position to make it. That being said, there were times that we dive at feet and tackle with our heads down. Pursuit angles are bad, but not nearly as bad as they were last year.

We still need a drastic upgrade in foot speed.

Don't forget about some of the world-class athletes Chief had to work with when he was here. Don't get me wrong, he's one of the very best there is, and I miss him too. But besides fundamentals and playcalling, even he would have a hard time slowing down Oregon with our current guys.

I truly do believe Coach Jones is fixing our roster one class at a time. But it will take some time for us to return to getting the Al Wilsons, Leonard Littles, and Eric Berrys of college football. We'll get there, though.

Your right if he would have went low I feel like he would have made that sack. I also seen our players getting out of position and over pursuing plays alot. That's something that needs to be addressed real bad.

I don't care that they get pushed around when they have such great discipline and not moving when they THINK they have drawn somebody offsides.

I mean a couple weeks ago this was greatest thing we have seen and it PROVED that we had great coaches.

What ever happened.....

Oh yeah. Typical volnation wetting their pants when we beat two lousy teams and then reality sets in.

It's not coaching it's talent!!!!

Btw this is not directed at you Bristol because I completely agree with your post

Why do people keep throwing out the excuse about speed? Yeah, there's a lack of speed, but being a smart football player and taking good angles negates the rushes to the edge. Speed is no excuse.

I couldn't disagree more on us lacking talent. We have some excellent athletes, maybe not as many as Bama or Georgia, but we definitely have some great guys on the first string. They are just a step off at times, and that seems to me to be more a symptom of bad fundamentals. Take a wrong step when a play starts and you can easily be three steps off. Take a bad angle and your a step off or more. Tackle high vs wrapping up.....and getting there doesn't matter.

The lacking speed and talent arguments doesn't explain why many other schools with much less to work with are able to field much better consistent units. Jones and company have only been here one summer, and had to once again change the system. I doubt they have had time to work on some fundamentals the way they would like. This is a result of constant change, and all the coaching shenanigans of last few years....it COULD, and CAN be corrected.

I didn't mean to say we don't have talent on the roster - we do, it's just that there's not enough of it. No depth will kill a team in the SEC. Not only that, but much of what talent we do have was poorly coached over the last few years. That sure isn't helping much.

But, while we do have some solid athletes, I'm not seeing any Al Wilsons or Travis Henrys lurking out there on the roster. That was my main point. We have some good talent now, but those guys were world class. Until we start getting (and coaching) the kind of players who strike fear into the hearts of opposing offenses and defenses, with even more upcoming talent to back them up, it's going to be hard for us in this league.

Again, we're getting there. It's just going to be a grind. I trust Coach Jones.

Taking bad angles to the ball, over perusing, poor tackling in space. There's a lot that needs to be worked on in this area that's for sure

I really just wish Fundamentals was spelled right in the title...... would a mod be nice enough to fix? I did it to myself....
